Fodor's Kaua'i, 3rd Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) ReviewI have used Fodors's guides for other locations and have generally been satisfied. Nothing can compare to Rick Steves, but Fodors is usually tons better than Lonely Planet guides. However, I was generally disappointed with this guide to Kaua'i. The main problem with this guide is that the section on sightseeing and exploration was arranged geographically, but I had to skip to a totally different section to find out anything about activities, restaurants, and shopping in any of these locations. For example, if you were going from Poipu in the south to Waimea in the west, you would have to check the exploring section for the west and the south, the beaches section, the water sports section, the land/air activities section, the restaurants section, and the shopping section just to figure out what you were going to do, eat, and see that day. This is just simply not practical and involves skipping around in the book A LOT. It would have been better to just turn to the "West section," and check out everything to do, see, eat, etc. there. The result is that we often got tired tired of trying to figure out what to do and we simply just drove around or sat at the pool (which isn't half-bad).The book isn't all bad: after reading it, I was excited to do everything that Kauai has to offer! It is very descriptive and very helpful once you find the section that you need. However, because of the major flaw described above, I couldn't recommend it to someone going to Kauai.
I would note that when I was choosing between this and the blue book, I thought to myself, "I have limited time on this island. I want to see the major sights, eat some great food, and relax on the beach or at the pool the rest of the time. What do I need a book that lists a hundred different secret beaches/hikes for?" After returning from Kauai, I think that this analysis still holds. You don't need to find the best beach - all the beaches are gorgeous. If I had weeks and weeks in Kauai, I may think differently, but I am guessing that most people don't. I'm not saying not to buy the blue book, but for a typical 5-day vacation, such thoroughness was unnecessary, although I may look into it next time I go because I will likely leave the Fodors guide at home.Fodor's Kaua'i, 3rd Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) Overview
