Refugee and Immigrant Health: A Handbook for Health Professionals ReviewI am not a health professional but, rather, an educator who discovered this volume (in paperback BTW) while helping a medical practictioner friend find resources on refugees. While I belive it would be enormously useful for those in medical fields, that tag puts an unfair limitation on this work. After some essential introductory chapters on major issues of world health,there is a brief write-up on each country from which refugees leave, including its social conditions, political instability, problems with dislocation and relocation, of course, a list of various diseases and medical issues, a section on how the refugee may respond to Western cultural differences affecting medical treatment, a section on childbirth, and last, a section on the culture's approach to death. The book should be in every high school library because it furnishes first a remarkably fine overview of world issues affecting refugees (who, in turn,affect our communities) and then a scholarly but succinct view of each country, its people and their problems. I was struck immediately that the book would be an excellent basis for a projected world history unit since each chapter brings anthropology, sociology, geography, and contemporary culture quickly into focus, especially for a wide variety of countries whose people we seldom hear much about and find ways of avoiding the plight of these masses. It would be an excellent jumping off point for work on world problems or those of individual countries, and I believe the level of language would be found reasonable by tenth or even ninth graders. For me, rhe book was an eye-opener. I had no idea of the extent of these problems or the enormous number of dislocated persons. In this respect there is a certain gut wrenching aspect to the reading--not sensational, just calmly expressed realities most of us would rather avoid.
