Wild Scholars: Designing a learning system for educating Scholars toward their passions and purposes. ReviewThe title implies a classroom of unruly and misbehaving students. I have memories of such a classroom growing up when the teacher left briefly and all hell broke loose. Why? In retrospect, my needs were suppressed. I was forced to passively sit for long periods of time while my teacher droned on. Was that education or scholarship? Of course not. Times have changed a little bit, but the so called educational system remains unable to channel the passions and interests in learning for young minds. Dr. Velegol's book is a reasoned rant against what he labels the "Boring Sorting Machine." He imagines an educational process where young scholars focus their eagerness and excitement on projects involving social entrepreneurship. Teachers become facilitators, mentors, and co-learners. Passion becomes the driving force for learning what needs to be learned to accomplish societal goals of freedom and justice. The tests are real, not some multiple choice exam.
Many of his ideas have been expressed in the literature. What is unique is Dr. Velegol's synthesis in proposing an educational new venture.
