A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health: The Recognition and Management of Psychological Issues (Essential Coaching Skills and Knowledge) ReviewThis book was written by a therapist and a doctor who also are coaches.The book is divided in 3 sections. The first - and most interesting one - deals with the boundaries of coaching. It really does the job, in that it explains to the coach without mental health background how to gather information and develop an opinion on whether or not the client is coachable.
The problem is, the authors claim that only a person without mental disorder can be safely coached, de facto ruling out ADHD coaching (and wellness coaching as well!!!). Most of the concerns in this book are about (a) what is covered under the insurance policy, (b) who is paying the session (the authors seem to think that it's ok for a business to ask the coach to violate the client privacy because their boss is paying for the sessions -- and here I have HUGE ethical concerns about the book's authors themselves!), (c) how to dump the mentally ill client on a "competent" mental health professional asap (which again gives me doubts on the book's authors' ethics) and (d) how to discourage the client from coming back.
The "case studies" inside the second section are fictional (the authors admit it), so they aren't worth your time, in that they aren't real (and you can tell because they just don't sound real, if you have any experience with *real* people with mental illness).
The third and last section might be useful for you in order to understand what your client is speaking of when s/he names medications, symptoms, therapies, etc.
In short: if I were you, I wouldn't buy it (3 stars is a big stretch, but I've rated it so high because the first section is cool and the third one might be useful, depending on how much knowledge you already have).
