AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership ReviewI've been working as an outdoor leader and whitewater guide for three years, first with kids on summer programs and currently with a variety of age groups year-round. This book helped me to evaluate the way I work with trip participants and co-workers. It opened my eyes to new ideas and has greatly expanded the bad of tricks I use in the field. I appreciated the safety-first focus and the author's friendly tone. Also, the stories, some of which are classics, made the book entertaining. It is unfortunate I didn't read this book a couple of years ago when I was launching into this line of work. If you don't have a lot of education in this field (I was a biology major) but you're involved in some outdoor leadership role this book can be a great help to you. Personally I'm loaning it to all the guides I work with.AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership Overview

We are planning a garden from scratch, and the information is very practical. It should help any gardener with deer in their area reduce their cost of resultant damage. The book deals with deer behavioural characteristics, and the likelihood of deer frequenting the property, as well as how to plan a deerproof garden. From plants that are detested by deer, to plants that will guarantee deer company: annual, perennial, shrub & tree choices are listed, including hardiness zone information. A range of strategies for keeping deer out of the garden is also included. The strategies go from fences to foul smelling substances to noise makers, and advice is given on the likelihood of success for each. AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership: Trip Planning * Group Dynamics * Decision Making * Leading Youth * Risk Management ReviewI have been leading various outdoor activities (hiking, rafting, canoeing etc) for 25+ years and while I am sure that the author of this book has far more experience than I have, everything he says jives with my own experience. Leaders of outdoor (and other) activities need to have both certain technical skills as well as certain management, planning and leadership skills. This book is not designed to teach the technical skills, it is designed to teach the other skills and I think it excels brilliantly at this. It is an excellent and very readable book for those new to leading groups in outdoor activities and is also a worthwhile book on management in general (i.e. in a business setting). It is also a worthwhile book for those who have been leading groups in outdoor activities for a while as part of their continuing education.
Full Disclosure: I lead day hikes for AMC's NY-NJ chapter. Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming - 2nd Edition ReviewIf you either are an adventure activities leader, or in training to be one Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming is an invalueable book to have at hand.
If you are already one it is usful for doing self reviews on your current performances, as it at the end of each of the 22 chapters it has a review box called 'effective adventure leaders should', a box containing a brief review of all the main points of that chapter which directly relate to the practical aspects of what leaders should be doing to ensure maximium safety within the group, while allowing the group to get the most out of the adventure experience they have been taken on. - I can almost garentee that every leader will pick up several tips from these sections no matter how experienced they re within the adventure leadership field.
If you are training to be an adventure leader, then each of the chapters guide you through different situations, highlighting not only the actions of the coach but in the ways the clients will react from these actions in different situations depending on there previous experience, motivation, and fears. Each chapter starts with a given relistic situation which directly relates to the theme of the chapter, which is then used to explode open the actions of the group and the leader in the given situation and analysis in small detail, the quality of the planning, leadership, and group advancement.
Due to the nature of the subject it can often feel like heavy reading (which it is), but it does have everything you could ever need to know within it's pages, and so makes it the best book on the subject I know of, and being on an B.A. Adventure Education course, I've read quite a few.
Also highly recommended by me to compliment it is the book Adventure Programming by John C. Miles(Editor), Simon Priest(Editor). Hardcover (December 1999)Effective Leadership in Adventure Programming - 2nd Edition Overview
