Tony Soprano on Management has additional attractions, if you're not a Sopranos fan. The book includes an excellent chapter offering advice on how to manage up (that is, how to influence people in management positions above you). There are also plenty of case studies and traditional advice on good management practices, along with worksheets to help readers identify their hot buttons or concerns and plan future corrective actions.

Executive Charisma: Six Steps to Mastering the Art of Leadership ReviewDeborah Benton is a serious student of what makes successful business people successful, and her book 'How to Think Like a CEO" reflects the seriousness and depth of her work there.
This book, on the other hand, is a very long hike for a very small picnic. She has essentially re-worked very familiar ground for her into a book that simply doesn't have enough to say to fill its length.
There are times, for example, when while reading, one realizes that the last paragraph has been nothing but semi-connected quotes from people in the large archive of Ms. Benton's interview files. It doesn't really go together and it doesn't really make any new points.
I would strongly recommend 'How to Think Like a CEO' but I would definitely not recommend this book.Executive Charisma: Six Steps to Mastering the Art of Leadership Overview

Powerful Project Leadership ReviewI ordered this book right after it came out based on the recommendation of some colleagues I deeply respect. As I read thru it, the things in the book deeply resonated with me. It really "hit home" on all the points regarding people issues and communication, especially managing relationships to set reasonable expectations and build trust and credibility with customers, stakeholders, peer managers, and others in the project's "community."
Afterward reading thru the book, I felt so frustrated because if I'd only known this stuff two years earlier, the previous project I'd been on might have been moderately successful (even though I wasn't the project manager). Instead, that project was the most miserable, infuriating, and betraying experience of my adult life. If only I had know all this back then [sigh]... I was utterly clueless about the communication dimension of project leadership until I read this book.
I have since been able to apply the wisdom of "Powerful Project Leadership" to subsequent projects with much success. I consider it required reading for any project leader, including technical leaders as well as project managers (especially brand new ones)Powerful Project Leadership Overview

They composed this book, that will be fascinating to a wider audience, with their leadership students in mind. Readers will find a wonderful assembly of literature references on which they based their chapters that helps the reader to really see the connections and implications of recent neuroscientific findings and the role of leadership theories and practices. If you are interested in either arena or both, I recommend this book for your consideration.

He truly has the insight and has understood the way each culture works in Europe. If you have a hard time understanding why an Italian will act the way he does in business, or wondering why being late 5 minutes at what you thought wasn't such an important meeting was so shocking to a German, this is the book to read. Even though Mole goes into depth about the reasons behind the way the different cultures think, the details aren't gruesome and keeps the reader entertained. It seriously made me understand in some cases why my fellow international colleagues react the way they do. AMC Guide to Outdoor Leadership ReviewI've been working as an outdoor leader and whitewater guide for three years, first with kids on summer programs and currently with a variety of age groups year-round. This book helped me to evaluate the way I work with trip participants and co-workers. It opened my eyes to new ideas and has greatly expanded the bad of tricks I use in the field. I appreciated the safety-first focus and the author's friendly tone. Also, the stories, some of which are classics, made the book entertaining. It is unfortunate I didn't read this book a couple of years ago when I was launching into this line of work. If you don't have a lot of education in this field (I was a biology major) but you're involved in some outdoor leadership role this book can be a great help to you. Leaders of outdoor (and other) activities need to have both certain technical skills as well as certain management, planning and leadership skills. This book is not designed to teach the technical skills, it is designed to teach the other skills and I think it excels brilliantly at this. It is an excellent and very readable book for those new to leading groups in outdoor activities and is also a worthwhile book on management in general (i.e. in a business setting). It is also a worthwhile book for those who have been leading groups in outdoor activities for a while as part of their continuing education.

Why Are We Bad at Picking Good Leaders A Better Way to Evaluate Leadership Potential ReviewMost leaders look good on paper - they are confident, they work hard and they are smart - and yet most of them fail to live up to expectations, according to Jeffrey Cohn and Jay Moran in this book. The book describes how there are seven key leadership attributes - integrity, empathy, emotional intelligence, vision, judgment, courage and passion - and good leadership selection decisions depend on accurate assessment of these attributes.
*Integrity is the fundamental leadership attribute. It includes honesty, consistency and solid ethics. It can be assessed with 360-degree referencing and with questioning involving hypothetical hard-to-recognize ethical dilemmas.
*Empathy is important for creating trust in followers. One way to assess a leader's empathy is through a simulation exercise requiring decisions and communication under strenuous conditions.
*Emotional Intelligence can be assessed through group 360-degree interviews and through questions designed to probe a leader's awareness of his or her own weaknesses and willingness and ability to learn from mistakes and grow.
*Vision is what enables leaders to take people to a new place. It can be assessed through a leader's ability to ask big unusual questions and articulate a theme as a story.
*Judgment is what a leader relies on to achieve a vision. Hypothetical case studies which require problem-solving ability provide one way of assessing this attribute.
*Courage and grace under pressure are required when a leader faces inevitable conflicts, competing forces and adversity. The attribute can be assessed by probing a leader's commitment to core values, ability to navigate uncertainty, and patience to endure.
*Passion provides a competitive fire necessary to overcome obstacles. It can be assessed through questions designed to dig beneath the surface to find out where the leader's drive comes from.
There are plenty of books on leadership which describe the character and attributes of a good leader, but there are few which give detailed insight into ways of assessing each of those attributes in a potential leadership candidate. This book provides a convincing description of the well-thought-out leadership assessment approach used by the authors, and anyone involved in leadership selection will find it useful.
