Overcoming Shyness ReviewI've only read about 30 pages, but already I am not satisfied with it. What is this about Jesus somehow being too shy and affected by the labels given to him by those in Nazareth as the reason why He could not perform miracles there? Since when did Jesus become discouraged by what others said of him? I read this book because I am very very chronically shy to the point where I am depressed half the time, but I'm not so gullible as to be pampered by comforting words that are clearly out of line with what I think to be the true meaning of a passage. In other thoughts thus far, I think the author is trying to target too wide an audience, giving it a rather impersonal tone. I will finish it nonetheless, for hope that it bring some advice to me, but truly I think the solution for you and for me comes from a life of prayer and patience and acceptance for who God has made you and believing that He loves you.Overcoming Shyness Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Clear Communication ReviewPresumption, prejudice, jumping to conclusions, a failure to listen...all these things get in the way of good communication. And the results can be damaging in all relationships, not least of which, those at work.
In Kris Cole's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Clear Communication", we're told that seventy percent of mistakes in the workplace are the direct result of poor communication. The impact can be immense, causing misunderstandings, loss of goodwill, loss of enthusiasm, low morale and reduced productivity.
This definitive book on the subject outlines in clear and simple language what causes bad communication, and the steps you can take to fix it. If you've ever wondered where your own communication skills fall short, maybe you're committing a few too many of Kris's "10 Deadly Sins Of Communication" (and let me tell you, being patronising, commanding or threatening won't get you far these days). If you're confronted daily with the recalcitrant office grump, check out the chapter on how to deal with difficult people. There are ways to win even the toughest battle of wills, and Kris tells us how.
Kris highlights the difference between good communicators and bad communicators, the importance of body language, voice and energy, and the value of reflective listening, to build rapport and achieve positive empathy with those around you. You'll learn the secrets of peak performers, and how to recognise personality types and temperaments so you can bring out the best in those working with or for you.
Importantly also for anyone in business these days, the book looks at clear and persuasive writing skills, including communication via fax and email.
This practical `how-to' book is a must for employers who'd like to assert a positive influence in the workplace and gain greater commitment and cooperation from those around them. I read the book in only a few hours, and gained enough practical commonsense ideas for some cool evaluation of my own communication skills. I'm now looking forward to some warmer relationships and more to the point professionally, improved productivity around me.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Clear Communication Overview

The Science of Influence: How to Get Anyone to Say "Yes" in 8 Minutes or Less ReviewI was extremely captivated by Cialdini's Influence: Science and Practice, which is one of the best read book ever on the subject of influence. i have read many other influence and persuation books since. this one is the best, and should be a requiered reading to extend the original cialdini's book. while cialdini's book is more simple and clear with the 6 weapons, this one is more rich and expanded to various details of the influence.
Basically, the book is about how people react to certain situation and how we can maximise our effort. people are more emotional rather than rational. how the same offering can be arranges to be more attractive. Each technique will yield a lot of success if we can smartly apply it to our daily life.
Hogan took a lot of various sources materials and put them together, along with his own research, into this wonderful book.
If you are a salesperson, negotiator, leader, or person with anything to do with people, you should read this and try out some of the techniques explained.
My book has been read and re read and flipped and marked, and i have used a lot of the materials for my seminars, and i still love this book and re read it often.
If you want to influence people in anyway, buy and read this book! 5 stars materials.....The Science of Influence: How to Get Anyone to Say "Yes" in 8 Minutes or Less Overview

Unstoppable Confidence: How to Use the Power of NLP to Be More Dynamic and Successful ReviewA more apt title for this book would be to call it "The Encyclopedia of Unstoppable Confidence".
I have not yet come across any other book, which focuses 100% on building greater confidence. This book gives you step by step detailed instructions to really "go for it".
Kent clearly explains the crucial difference between "confidence" and "competence" in the first few pages. I made the mistake of assuming that if I was competent in a specific area, than I automatically had confidence in that area.
Once you understand the distinction he gives a simple but highly effective formula
Competence + confidence = success
Have you ever had the feeling of a light bulb switching on in your head? Well I had that same feeling when I really understood the difference between "confidence" and "competence" and resolved to take the book more seriously.
On page 27 he gives a fantastic example about how to disassociate your emotions from yourself personally. In other words DONT take possession of something, which is just a mental process. Some examples of mental processes from the book are fear, shyness and depression. All of these are not actual things but just mental processes or sequences of thoughts that run in your mind.
A brilliant example and I quote from the book (page 26) "The language you use to describe what you are feeling impacts that feeling tremendously, and it is your knowledge, your awareness of these processes that gives you power over them. Just like when somebody said, "I' am depressed". What they've done is built that notion into their very being. Nobody can be depressed all the time. If they were, they wouldn't' call it depression. It'd just be their normal state of being. Instead, people who consider themselves depressed should be saying, "I run a process through my mind that causes me to experience certain pictures, sounds, and feelings inside that I have collectively labeled as depression."
Yes I know this sounds like some new age stuff, and until you TRY IT OUT yourself you will not realize the power of disassociating yourself from your processes. There are many more such examples, which switched on the light bulb in my head.
The book also talks about creating the kind of body language, which gives you unstoppable confidence. I wish there were some pictures of "steepling fingers" as I could think of a variety of ways to steeple fingers based on the authors explanation in the book and am not sure which is the correct way.
Another excellent technique is to parrot to create verbal rapport. The book lists key words/phrases to help people keep on talking non-stop and increase rapport. Be careful using them however because using them correctly will ensure that you will be listening to them for hours...ahh the price of success!!!
Another superb technique is to ask open-ended question, instead of yes/no type of questions to gain rapport.
My biggest gripe with the book is that while the author specifically mentions about creating a personal confidence calendar to schedule and practice various exercises in the book he does not give any suggested plans. This book contains so many different techniques for building confidence that unless you take good notes or read the book multiple times it is easy to miss some important techniques. I would have appreciated a sample step by step plan(menu) to incorporate in daily life, just like some of the dieting and exercise books suggest.
Obviously such a plan will be generalized but at least it will be a good starting point to the other alternative of digging through the book multiple times and/or make copious notes. The serious student will no doubt do what ever it takes and assimilate most of the techniques from the book. This is not a read and throw type of book. This is a book you will come back to again and again as you build layer upon layer of confidence techniques into your personality.
The cover design of a man stomping confidently makes me smile every time I look at it, which is good since this makes me pick up the book again!
The words on the page are densely packed in the book and it seemed liked it took forever to read a page. I sincerely feel every self-development book should reinforce concepts learned in each chapter by having a brief summary and/or short quiz and real life exercises at the end of each chapter. I wish this book had some of these to help reinforce the concepts at each stage.
If the book were to contain only one chapter "Twenty explosive techniques for unstoppable confidence" it would be worth it. One technique I already started using is called "rapid confidence at will". I used the PUMA GRRRROWL and felt simply awesome. I used some of the techniques, which appealed to me immediately, as I read the book. There are just sooooooo many techniques that I will keep going back to the book again and again.
I would have appreciated more examples of how the author used these techniques to overcome shyness in a variety of real life circumstances.
One section I particularly fell in love with is the chapter titled "Speaking the language of confidence". Kent contrasts the vocabulary of the shy person (who uses words like try, hope, attempt, wish etc) versus the vocabulary of the confident person (absolutely, guaranteed, sure, certainly etc). As I gained more awareness I am minimizing use of the shy persons vocabulary.
This book uses a lot of NLP based techniques, but thankfully the complex jargon is substituted for simple precise explanations. The appendix contains a comprehensive list of visual, auditory and kinesthetic qualities.
All in all an excellent book, and a MUST have in your personal success library if you are a serious student of success.Unstoppable Confidence: How to Use the Power of NLP to Be More Dynamic and Successful Overview

How to Say It At Work: Putting Yourself Across with Power Words, Phrases, Body Language, and Communication Secrets ReviewI started teaching people to make PowerPoint presentations around 1992. Around 1995, I realized that many people were talking about themselves, so I suggested that the most important word they could use was "You." In 2003, I realized that people who wanted to be accepted by their audience should use the word "We." And then I picked up this book and read that the the three most important words in a business person's vocabulary were "we," "us," and "our." And that was on page eleven. At that point I was sold.
It's very easy to open your mouth and say your message in a way that alienates people. Very few people can negotiate difficult communications, but this book will help them do this. The book shows you words, phrases and body language to use and to avoid. It has numerous samples of conversations you can have with your fellow workers to put yourself in the best position.
The book covers all kinds of spoken business communications - the four largest sections include Getting a Job, speaking with your Supervisors, your Colleagues, and your Subordinates. Other groups are Prospective Clients, Current Clients, Handling Credit, Collection, and Customer Complaints, Vendors and Suppliers, and Lenders and Investors. In many cases you'll see the traps you can fall into.
You need to use this book with a little thought, in that the circumstances are usually similar to what you have to deal with, but not identical. But a few minutes' reading will change you from being a tongue-tied person to someone who achieves what you want.
I feel sorry for people who dismiss this and other similar books as "just common sense." I've known few people who possessed even a fraction of the skills shown in this book, and my own experience shows that I spent over ten years learning the information that appears in the beginning of the book.
Definitely a must-have, and a good book to build your general communications skills. And you'll stop coming away from meetings thinking, "I wish I could have said that better."How to Say It At Work: Putting Yourself Across with Power Words, Phrases, Body Language, and Communication Secrets Overview

Understanding Body Language (Barron's Business Success) ReviewGiven the price, I was a little shocked at the diminutive size of this paperback. It only has 98 pages and it's packed with illustrations and bullet items. Word count is probably in the 15,000 to 20,000 range, so I guess we're paying for the "Barron's" name rather than content.
Anyway, on to content:
The first chapter was probably the best. It had some interesting information on body language, the senses and Neurolinguistic Programming. The authors talk about "visual thinkers" and "kinesthetic thinkers" and explain how to recognize the different types and adjust your body language accordingly.
The rest of the book has pretty basic stuff: "Anger tends to be conveyed by leaning forward, sometimes with fist clenched..." But there are enough insightful observations and quirky tidbits sprinkled about to make the chapters interesting. The authors also spend time on how body language (epically hand gestures) differs in meaning from one part of the world to the next. Neat stuff there.
So all-in-all it was an interesting read, but based on the word count and content it should be priced in the $3.95 range rather than $8.95.

Reading People: How to Understand People and Predict Their Behavior--Anytime, Anyplace ReviewI find it interesting that reviewers either loved this book or hated it. I think when read in its entirety, and not as a cookbook to human behavior, it is most helpful and thoughtful. I took from this book the importance of not stereotyping or jumping to conclusions about people. Rather, the authors convincingly state reasons for looking for patterns, observing what people do and say, truly listening to others and projecting to others what you really mean to project. I think the disappointed reviewers who made comments here were looking for ways to make snap judgments and fulfilled their own negative expectations. I was looking for insight and ways to avoid making snap judgments and I found them. Thank you to the authors. I'd love to attend a seminar by these people.Reading People: How to Understand People and Predict Their Behavior--Anytime, Anyplace Overview

The Power of Body Language Review
What you don't say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. As interesting as it is to learn to read others, it is also important to learn your own particular non verbal quirks: i.e.: Tonya's book teaches that although the reader may not be aware of it, people receive messages through body language (nonverbal signals) that can have a huge impact in a positive or negative way, just as the sound of your voice may make more of an impact (positively or negatively) than your actual words.
She teaches the reader to watch for body language signals may indicate truths that are not expressed in words. She also teaches the nuances and psychology of mirroring body language. The book clarifies the meanings of signals and nonverbal cues and shows the reader how to use this knowledge to his/her best advantage in every day situations, including the differences in male and female body language.
After reading this book, I found that watching political speeches more interesting, especially when the body language and spoken words do not match.
I would recommend this book to everyone.

What Every BODY is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People ReviewI have been in law enforcement for close to 30 years on a large agency- I am always on the lookout for useful tools of the trade that I can use and pass along to my investigators. This book is great! It is packed with useful information. No, I am not a shill for this book and do not know the author- although I have met many professional law enforcement investigators who have written good books and manuals. I am impressed with the insights and natural techniques contained in this book. I am ordering a copy for all the investigators in my unit, I am that impressed with this book. Sure, there is always something about any book that does not satisfy a reader- but I honestly must say there is little about this book that I didn't like. What Every BODY is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Body Language ReviewLet me first briefly mention my background. I hold a Master of Arts in Communication and I teach Speech & Communication Studies at one of the top community colleges in the US. I am fairly well versed in the research literature on nonverbal communication (NVC). I very much disagree with several of the reviewers of this book, though I do agree with the majority. Interestingly enough, I disagree with the reviews that are first seen on the site.
I think this book is awesome! It is the ONLY written-for-regular-people book on general nonverbal communication that I would recommend to others. While I have certainly not read every popular press book on NVC, I have read through at least sections of at least a dozen. All of the ones that I have perused contain ideas that are not supported by actual social scientific research. Dr. Andersen has written a wonderful book on NVC which is actually based upon real research.
(Quick note - there are other books written for regular people which deal with certain aspects of NVC which I would recommend. For example, I would recommend any of the works by Paul Ekman, John Gottman, Deborah Tannen, and Dane Archer; I would also recommend Brian Bates' The Human Face and Malcolm Gladwell's Blink. For a general book on nonverbal communication, though, Dr. Andersen's book is the best I have ever read.)
There are a couple of reasons why I suspect some of the reviewers did not like this book. I don't know that my suspicions are correct, of course. However, here is what I suspect is going on. First, I suspect that those who did not like the book are not aware of the current research in nonverbal communication. I don't mean that in a "snobby" way. Most people don't have the time or inclination to read scholarly journals. Second, I think some people wanted the book to contain the "secrets" of body language. They wanted to be able to almost read people's minds based upon their nonverbal cues. In other words, they wanted Dr. Andersen to say something like, "When people look at you and tilt their head in a certain way, it means they are thinking this way." Dr. Andersen repeatedly points out the inherent ambiguity in NVC and so, he does not include any bogus "secrets" like that. The viewpoint that you cannot read someone like a book is supported by the research in NVC but does not seem as exciting as claiming that you can.
I would like to address one criticism that a couple of reviewers level at the book. They say that Dr. Andersen states the obvious in the book. As a matter of fact, he does do this a bit, but I do not consider that a bad thing at all. Stating the obvious can raise our awareness of what we already "know." Let me give you an example. I often have my students do an activity where they get into pairs and be very good listeners for each other. They do this quite well. So, they "know" how to be good listeners. At the same time, I ask them to be aware of their listening behaviors outside of the classroom. Many of them report behaving in ways inconsistent with effective listening. So, they "know" how to be good listeners; they just don't do what they "know." By raising their awareness of what they already "know" about good listening, they are able to become more effective listeners.
I don't want anyone to misunderstand. This book is not just what you already know. There is much in Dr. Andersen's book that goes beyond what most readers probably already "know" about nonverbal communication. Many people might have heard that communication is only 7% verbal and 93% nonverbal. This is FALSE!!! It is NOT TRUE!!! Dr. Andersen points out on page 4 that these sorts of statistical claims are bogus and he tells you why. In Chapter 2 he discusses the relationship between the bicameral brain and NVC. This discussion goes way beyond "if a person smiles it means they are happy." The discussion of haptics in Chapter 6 goes beyond what you would typically read in a brief discussion of touching behavior. I learned some new stuff about olfactory communication in Chapter 9. The chapters on gender and culture contained some ideas that I doubt a lot of people will have thought about. For example, Dr. Andersen points out that men and women are not from different planets. I think anyone who has bought into the John Gray "men are from Mars and women are from Venus" concept should read this chapter.
Let me sum this up - I am reviewing this book from the point of view of someone who teaches Communication Studies at the college level. I am familiar with much of the research on nonverbal communication. I do not know Dr. Andersen personally and have no financial reason to recommend his book. This is the best general book on nonverbal communication I have ever read and I unreservedly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject.

I Can Read You Like a Book: How to Spot the Messages and Emotions People Are Really Sending With Their Body Language ReviewMy first B.A. was in Interpersonal Communication, a large part of which involved nonverbal communication (aka body language). That was decades ago. Now I enjoy reading more recent information to get different opinions and updated theories.
This book is a huge disappointment. If you remove the generalized information such as making sure you understand what is normal for any given person before attempting to read his/her body language, you are unfortunately left with the author's egomaniacal biography. You even get to know how he has his hair cut (military flat top) and what kind of cowboy boots he wears (steel-toed), although neither applies to reading someone like a book. The author just really seems to want to talk about himself.
In one section, the reader is shown a photo of a man, woman, and child. You know, due to the author's own "baseline," that this is a family photo. Instead of simply explaining what the nonverbal communication in the picutre means, the author goes on for several pages describing the lives of each of the people in the photo. There is no reason for this; it has nothing to do with the point theoretically being made. We even get to hear about the "estranged grandfather." After the brief explanation of his posture, we are told that Grandpa "at the age of 35, went ashore on D-Day, with the 29th Infantry Division; to some extent, that earned him the right to look cocky." Huh? Do you want to hear that subjective bit of information, much less need to read it?
I'm sure Gregory Hartley really is a big ol' beer-guzzling macho guy who intimidates the daylights out of those he so proudly interrogates, but I personally find him so annoying I can only give very little credibility to the information in his book.
I've got a degree in the subject. I've taught the subject on campus and in seminars. There are other books out there for those who want to read the latest on nonverbal communication. Don't bother with this one unless you're prepared to wade through the details of Mr. Hartley's personal information.I Can Read You Like a Book: How to Spot the Messages and Emotions People Are Really Sending With Their Body Language Overview

The Nonverbal Advantage: Secrets and Science of Body Language at Work (Bk Business) ReviewAuthor Carol Kinsey Goman has added another remarkable achievement to her already significant reputation in the business world with her "must have book" on communications, "The Nonverbal Advantage: Secrets and Science of Body Language at Work". She demystifies some of the basic elements of everyday business communication with a well-written breakdown of human interactions dealing with body language. The book not only teaches but also enlightens the reader about what they and others are unconsciously communicating with their eyes, hands and feet positions and other body gestures and movements.
The book is written for the business world but what you learn can be applied in your own personal life as well. The first thing that you realize is that it is very difficult to fake and manipulate what your body is going to communicate. The book will not be very helpful for those seeking to learn how to use body language to give different or false messages than are in your heart. The book does give you greater insights on how to read others at meetings, or in one-on-one-situations. In some cases, this book will act like a Rosetta Stone for those who are clueless as to what the body is saying about each of us.
Goman uses wonderful personal examples that are easy to identify with. The reader will be able to recognize themselves and others as she takes them through a learning experience that will enrich their work and personal lives. The book is well written and easy to read. I could see this book being used for groups and companies as part of any communications-training program.
This book will change you and alter the way you look at people. It will make you think and reflect and perhaps wake you up and change how you perceive others and yourself. It is a profound work that is scientifically grounded and not some new-age feel good effort to say what has already been said. This book manages to break some new ground while pulling together lots of known and accepted theories of nonverbal communication.
This book receives my highest personal endorsement and recommendation. This book belongs on every serious business manager's office shelf.
The American Authors Association has selected this book for one of its annual Golden Quill Awards as "The Best Business Book of the Year - 2008".The Nonverbal Advantage: Secrets and Science of Body Language at Work (Bk Business) Overview

Body Language For Dummies ReviewI've been on a body language kick ever since Lie to Me came out. I just finished reading The Definitive Guide to Body Language and making my way through Body Language for Dummies. I also have What Every Body is Saying and Telling Lies on the way. That said, Body Language for Dummies is really just a reworded version of the Definitive Guide to Body Language, with a whole mess of unnecessary anecdotes and "examples" that are worded for a pre-teen (ex: Joe and Jane meet at her house, but Joe's crossed arms and crossed legs clearly indicated that Jane was unwelcome. So Jane left.) The substantive examples are all taken from The Definitive Guide to Body Language, such as Princess Diane's looks, JFK and Nixon prior to the debate, and nearly every item - particularly the examples of other scientists and sociologists - were nearly copy and pasted into this book and reworded for the "Dummies" style we're all familiar with (if you read a lot of these as I do). It was so blatant that I actually looked at the copyright dates to see who lifted material from whom. The content, then, is pretty good, but you have to sift through many paragraphs of "Anecdotes" (as called in the book) that are unnecessary and provide no value. If you've already read The Definitive Guide to Body Language, save your money on this book; it is the same thing. If you haven't, I'd recommend that over this. The only upside to this is that I planned on reading that book again to pick up things I may have forgotten and with this, I don't have to. I'll review the others when I receive and finish them.Body Language For Dummies Overview

The Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help--or Hurt--How You Lead ReviewWe all know the message we see with our eyes doesn't always match the message we hear with our ears. For example, think of the role of a parent hearing their child say they didn't break the lamp, but the child's body language says otherwise. In her new book, THE SILENT LANGUAGE OF LEADERS, Carol Kinsey Goman sums this up with this statement, "body language is in the eye of the beholder".

This very intriguing book defines the subtitle - how body language can help - or hurt - how you lead. The book begins asking the question, "What does leadership look like?" and answers it with a succinct analysis of the 1960 presidential debates (the first televised debates) where Americans viewed a very nervous, defensive and unprepared looking Richard Nixon compared to a very calm, poised and well prepared Jack Kennedy. People who saw the debates on television easily recognized Kennedy as the clear winner, however those who heard the debate on the radio thought Nixon came out ahead.
After developing what leadership looks like, Chapter 2 looks at negotiations and the importance of "engagement", as well as the body language that accompanies engagement or the lack of it. People put on their best "poker-face" when entering negotiations, but Goman teaches other things to look for that a poker-face cannot hide. A big portion of this chapter also deals with how to deal with someone that is disengaged. The chapter concludes with a very valuable set of body language guidelines for negotiators.
Every leader has had to deal at one time or another with leading change. Change can be hard to accept as it forces people out of their comfort zones but chapter 3 teaches how leaders can use their body language to improve buy-in. Effectively creating buy-in revolves around building an emotional connection and developing the WIFFM (what's in it for me) answer.
Next we find a short but very informative chapter on collaboration. Since much of business today is via rich technology such as video conferencing, this can make things such as collaboration more of a challenge than through conventional face-to-face methods. Here you'll find tips useful for all types of collaboration building.
Chapter 6 looks at gender and body language. I found this chapter a fascinating study in gender differences in the workplace. This chapter explains the mars/venus effect in the boardroom.
Many of us today find ourselves working across cultural boundaries. Working With Global Teams bridges many of those boundaries. Here we look not only at cultural differences, but also similarities that span all cultures. The author identifies 7 universal emotional expressions that we will see no matter where we are.

In Chapter 8, Goman brings in a multicultural panel to discuss 8 specific questions. I was amazed at the variation of answers to the questions. These very simple business related questions are also very specific and could save the reader from a very embarrassing situation. "What does it mean to be "on-time" for a meeting?", sounds like a very simple question, but has very differing answers depending on the culture involved. This chapter concludes with a "cheat-sheet" of sorts with abbreviated answers to each of the 8 questions for the 12 countries/cultures of the panelists.

The book concludes with a chapter on the Nonverbal Future of Leadership. Here we learn how Baby boomers changed how business is conducted; how Gen Xers have transformed those rules of business and what we can expect in the way of changes brought on as Gen Yers make their way into the workforce.

This book is invaluable for taking leadership to a higher level.

The Definitive Book of Body Language ReviewThis book introduces body language from the point of view of business executives. The authors specialize in the use of body language for business and politics. I found the illustrations and photos that accompany the text to be very funny and appropriate. This is not a very scholarly book, so if you're looking for a very serious and academic book about the study of body language, then this isn't the volume you're looking for, but if you'd just like an introduction to body language from a practical point of view, then this is a perfect book to read. In addition, it is very easy and entertaining to read, so I can recommend this to anyone. The Definitive Book of Body Language Overview

DO YOU SEE WHAT IM SAYING - Secrets of Body Language Made Simple ReviewI bought this a few years ago to use as a training aid and it works well when teaching someone the basics. It provides a good foundation from which to build upon. When watching, it is clear that it is a low budget production and the script is a bit laughable but it does the job.DO YOU SEE WHAT IM SAYING - Secrets of Body Language Made Simple Overview

09 - Body Language in Business ReviewWell, unfortunately it's not what I was looking for and I'm honestly looking for something very unique. The DVD is good and interesting but poor in terms of presentation. I wish we could have something more creative so, we could use it as a tool for a meeting.
By the way, talking about price.....TOOOOO much for what it is.09 - Body Language in Business Overview
