Asserting Yourself: A Practical Guide For Positive Change, Updated Edition ReviewThis book is extremely useful. I can truly say that it has changed the quality of my relationships in a profound way. The authors teach you how to solve problems with people in relationships ranging from strangers to friends to family. I found answers to problem situations that had frustrated me for years. It taught me how to stand up for myself and ask people to change their undesirable behavior in a way that they are willing to cooperate with. (Most of the time). I am amazed at how well their techniques work. This is not about how to control people. It is about how to control your self. There is an alternative to fighting or giving in. If you want to have happier relationships with people and feel much better about yourself, buy this book.Asserting Yourself: A Practical Guide For Positive Change, Updated Edition Overview

Comic Sense: A Comic Book on Common Sense and Social Skills for Young People with Asperger's and ADHD ReviewI absolutely love Comic Sense!
What a great way to make something as intangible as common sense real.
I was hooked with the first illustration!
I was reeled in with the rest of the content!
The format is visually appealing. For those of us with ADHD or Asperger's, visual overload and visual crowding can hinder our performance.
Content is supported with examples, tips, and activities that help bring about the awareness needed to develop the aspect of common sense being addressed.
How fortunate for kids/adults with (not only) ADHD and Asperger's to have a book available to them that answers some questions that they may fear to ask.
I am recommending Comic Sense to colleagues, teachers, parents, and teens as a practical guide to understanding and developing common sense.Comic Sense: A Comic Book on Common Sense and Social Skills for Young People with Asperger's and ADHD Overview

Overcoming Shyness ReviewI've only read about 30 pages, but already I am not satisfied with it. What is this about Jesus somehow being too shy and affected by the labels given to him by those in Nazareth as the reason why He could not perform miracles there? Since when did Jesus become discouraged by what others said of him? I read this book because I am very very chronically shy to the point where I am depressed half the time, but I'm not so gullible as to be pampered by comforting words that are clearly out of line with what I think to be the true meaning of a passage. In other thoughts thus far, I think the author is trying to target too wide an audience, giving it a rather impersonal tone. I will finish it nonetheless, for hope that it bring some advice to me, but truly I think the solution for you and for me comes from a life of prayer and patience and acceptance for who God has made you and believing that He loves you.Overcoming Shyness Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Clear Communication ReviewPresumption, prejudice, jumping to conclusions, a failure to listen...all these things get in the way of good communication. And the results can be damaging in all relationships, not least of which, those at work.
In Kris Cole's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Clear Communication", we're told that seventy percent of mistakes in the workplace are the direct result of poor communication. The impact can be immense, causing misunderstandings, loss of goodwill, loss of enthusiasm, low morale and reduced productivity.
This definitive book on the subject outlines in clear and simple language what causes bad communication, and the steps you can take to fix it. If you've ever wondered where your own communication skills fall short, maybe you're committing a few too many of Kris's "10 Deadly Sins Of Communication" (and let me tell you, being patronising, commanding or threatening won't get you far these days). If you're confronted daily with the recalcitrant office grump, check out the chapter on how to deal with difficult people. There are ways to win even the toughest battle of wills, and Kris tells us how.
Kris highlights the difference between good communicators and bad communicators, the importance of body language, voice and energy, and the value of reflective listening, to build rapport and achieve positive empathy with those around you. You'll learn the secrets of peak performers, and how to recognise personality types and temperaments so you can bring out the best in those working with or for you.
Importantly also for anyone in business these days, the book looks at clear and persuasive writing skills, including communication via fax and email.
This practical `how-to' book is a must for employers who'd like to assert a positive influence in the workplace and gain greater commitment and cooperation from those around them. I read the book in only a few hours, and gained enough practical commonsense ideas for some cool evaluation of my own communication skills. I'm now looking forward to some warmer relationships and more to the point professionally, improved productivity around me.The Complete Idiot's Guide to Clear Communication Overview

Play to Grow Over 200 Games Designed to Help Your Special Child Develop Fundamental Social Skills ReviewAlthough my autistic son has been in special ed school for several years, I've always yearned to supplement his therapy and more importantly connect with him in our own home. Not having been trained in special ed, I was at a loss as to how to proceed. I watched his therapists working with him and I also asked his school therapists for advice, but I found it hard to follow as he was not usually in the mood of doing what they suggested. When I found this book, I was thrilled. Firstly, it suggested games for working on helping him stay focused so that he would eventually play other games. Then it gave ideas for helping with his rigidity so he'd be more willing to play with me. The most important aspect of this book is its emphasis on working with your specific child's motivations. If your child is obsessed with Barney and needs to work on speaking clearly it contains games that show you how to combine Barney with your speaking clearly goal. It is clear, easy-to-read, and contains helpful lists of supplies and variations for the games. It gave me the skills to turn my vague goal of wanting to play with my son into a reality. I am now excited every time I sit down with him as I know know what to do. Originally created as a supplement to the Son-Rise program, this book is ideal for any parent or teacher who wants to play with her special needs child and needs concrete guidance.Play to Grow Over 200 Games Designed to Help Your Special Child Develop Fundamental Social Skills Overview

The Guide to Dating for Teenagers With Asperger Syndrome ReviewI would give this book 2.5 to 3 stars out of a possible 5. I'm glad I found it on a bargain table, as I do not believe it is worth the full-price of $20. Despite the title, the book was not truly a book written for Aspies, but one which would be helpful for the general population. Books written by individuals on the autistic spectrum, or which at least include personal stories written by individuals on the spectrum would be far more useful.
The author suggests using this book as a currciulum to be studied by parents and teens together. A better strategy might be for the parent to read the book first, post-it note sections which might need additional clarification or input (for example, a "Let's talk about this one" on the section on masturbation so you can discuss house rules or religious/moral views which have an influence), an the offer that the teen can feel free to ask you any questions or share any thoughts which arise while reading the book. This makes the book less of a chore and more of a reference/resource.

A Quest for Social Skills for Students with Autism or Asperger's: Ready-to-use lessons with games, role-play activities, and more ReviewThis curriculum is so easy to use! Once the materials are made, it is easy to follow the experiential stories which are specifically designed for all types of students with social skills deficits (not just Asperger Syndrome or autism). There is a sequence to the topics with the students reading a story, doing related activities and then creating a short written report. There are even specific follow-up suggestions to send to parents. I have been able to create small groups of students to use it with and I am seeing real progress! This book is a good value and I would highly recommend it to any professional or parent who is trying to address social skills deficits related to communication, friendship, school readiness and a host of other relevant topics. I am familiar with many similar products and this is one of the best.A Quest for Social Skills for Students with Autism or Asperger's: Ready-to-use lessons with games, role-play activities, and more Overview

Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide ReviewDo you have a son or daughter recently diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (AS)? If so, then buy this book now. I wish this book had been available four years ago when our son was diagnosed with AS. I searched for every book available to understand AS, and if this had been available then, what a treasure it would have been to find. Now that it is published, I feel that everyone who advocates for a son or daughter with AS should buy and use the insights this book has to offer. There are many. Written by an expert familiar with AS, the style gives enough technical information while still being easy to read. There are parts you will laugh outloud reading, recognizing the similarities to your own child. You will learn about the great diversity in symptoms that kids with AS can experience, and those that they share with most of their peers. Worried about the future success of your child, family issues, school performance? There's are entire chapters on these issues and more. There's a helpful "Question and Answer" section in the back of the book, and one of the best sections is the Resources, that you can access to learn more. I have bought several copies of this excellent book- for my wife and me, my parents, for our son's school, his para, and some of our friends- so that they will have a comprehensive and excellent resource to draw upon when the question arises, "What's Asperger Syndrome? How can we help (insert your son's or daughter's name here)?"Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide Overview

Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect ReviewI highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read. Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect Overview

It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success ReviewWriting as someone who has lived with learning disabilities for nearly 50 years now, I cannot say strongly enough that I sincerely wish all of my teachers and parents had read this book. I will go a little further than that---I wish the pastoral counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrists that I have dealt with as an adult would read this book.
This book brought back memory after memory of times that I have been misunderstood (and rejected) by those around me, and also times that I have greatly misunderstood social and job-related incidents (and acted inappropriately as a result). Some of the long-lasting psychological damage that I have had as a result could have been alieviated if only those around me had been aware of the difficulties that I was having (and continue to have).
Notice that I did not say that the misunderstandings and social errors I make would have stopped. I don't think they would have.
The book does not offer any cure-alls. Its biggest contribution is to increase the understanding of the social ramifications of learning disabilities. I have found that very few normal people have any understanding of this at all; and their response can be quite damaging. It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success Overview

The Hidden Curriculum: Practical Solutions for Understanding Unstated Rules in Social Situations ReviewOne of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!
