Asperger Download: A guide to Help Teenage Males with Asperger Syndrome Trouble-Shoot Life's Challenges ReviewAsperger Download is a unique treasure written from both the perspective of the young man with asperger syndrome (Damian) and commented upon by his mother's (Josie) perspective. It is an alphabetical guidebook through the many topics and areas young men experience from (A)Anxiety (B)Bullying (C)Chat Rooms to (X)Xplanation (Y)You (Z)Zits. It's full of useful hints written in a fun and straightforward style. Some suggestions are fun and creative and some handle serious issues such as harrassment, revenge and suicide. Having the mother/son perspective highlights different angles of subjects making this a terrific book for both mother and son. Another nice touch at the end of the book is some poetry by the thoughtful Damian. I highly recommend this book for young men with aspergers who are entering their teen years. It's an easy to follow A-Z guidebook that touches on various aspects teen boys face. Comic Sense: A Comic Book on Common Sense and Social Skills for Young People with Asperger's and ADHD ReviewI absolutely love Comic Sense!
What a great way to make something as intangible as common sense real.
I was hooked with the first illustration!
I was reeled in with the rest of the content!
The format is visually appealing. For those of us with ADHD or Asperger's, visual overload and visual crowding can hinder our performance.
Content is supported with examples, tips, and activities that help bring about the awareness needed to develop the aspect of common sense being addressed.
How fortunate for kids/adults with (not only) ADHD and Asperger's to have a book available to them that answers some questions that they may fear to ask.
I am recommending Comic Sense to colleagues, teachers, parents, and teens as a practical guide to understanding and developing common sense.Comic Sense: A Comic Book on Common Sense and Social Skills for Young People with Asperger's and ADHD Overview

Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide ReviewDo you have a son or daughter recently diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (AS)? If so, then buy this book now. I wish this book had been available four years ago when our son was diagnosed with AS. I searched for every book available to understand AS, and if this had been available then, what a treasure it would have been to find. Now that it is published, I feel that everyone who advocates for a son or daughter with AS should buy and use the insights this book has to offer. There are many. Written by an expert familiar with AS, the style gives enough technical information while still being easy to read. There are parts you will laugh outloud reading, recognizing the similarities to your own child. You will learn about the great diversity in symptoms that kids with AS can experience, and those that they share with most of their peers. Worried about the future success of your child, family issues, school performance? There's are entire chapters on these issues and more. There's a helpful "Question and Answer" section in the back of the book, and one of the best sections is the Resources, that you can access to learn more. I have bought several copies of this excellent book- for my wife and me, my parents, for our son's school, his para, and some of our friends- so that they will have a comprehensive and excellent resource to draw upon when the question arises, "What's Asperger Syndrome? How can we help (insert your son's or daughter's name here)?"Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide Overview

A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies and a Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism ReviewMy son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 4. I was lucky enough to have a friend recommend I attend a conference dealing with Applied Behavioral Analysis(ABA). During the break I wandered through the hundreds of books available for purchase in the lobby. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed.
Surrounded by parents of Autistic children, caregivers, special education teachers and psychologists, I decided to ask for help. Each person I asked "which is the best book to buy first?" pointed to "A work in progress".
2 years later this is the book I recommend to anyone interested in learning about ABA, or implementing a behavioral program for their child.
From toilet training to social skills, how to teach imaginative play to basic conversations, Ron Leaf left no stone unturned.
The instructions, explanations and examples are clear and concise. You will learn about ABA and how to implement a home program with this easy to use guide. For professionals and novices alike, this book will be a tremendous help. Though we have moved on to the more advanced "Teach me language", "A work in progress" is always close at hand.
"Nothing is impossible, some things just require more steps"A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies and a Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism Overview

The Hidden Curriculum: Practical Solutions for Understanding Unstated Rules in Social Situations ReviewOne of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!
