Storytelling with Children ReviewThis phenomenal book not only explains why telling stories is important, but also gives many examples of how to get started. The author provides lots of inspiration and encouragement and gives you the tools you need to weave stories into your everyday routine - "transition times", traditional reading times, times when children are doing something you'd like them to stop doing, to pass time waiting in lines, in the car, etc. I've learned a wonderful new way to interact with my children. Once you start telling stories - your children will never let you stop - and you won't want to either.Storytelling with Children Overview

What Babies and Children Really Need: How Mothers and Fathers Can Nurture Children's Growth for Health and Wellbeing Review"This book should be given at every baby shower. It should be at every school for midwives, required reading for every school for Nannies. It should be on the shelf in every family, and pulled out as needed - when the baby is neonate, a toddler, school age and even during the teen years. Like to see it become the Dr. Spock of the Twenty-first Century!" Svea Gold. Author of "If Kids Just Came with Instruction Sheets" and Director of Fern Ridge Press. Mending the Broken Bond: The 90-Day Answer to Developing a Loving Relationship with Your Child ReviewParental love for a child is one of the strongest emotional bonds. However, love alone does not guarantee a healthy, solid relationship or a happy, confident and well-adjusted child. And isn't that what you want the most? Dr. Frank Lawlis shows you how to channel your love so that you can be a successful parent. Each chapter focuses on one of the 10 steps Lawlis suggests to build, reshape and strengthen the bonds between you and your child. His steps include learning effective communication, managing behavioral challenges, and developing the ability to cooperate, heal and forgive. The book overflows with helpful quizzes, exercises and real-life examples, adding structure and life to his advice. Although Lawlis crafts his plan to fit a 90-day schedule, getAbstract suggests that parents seeking guidance concentrate on the chapters that address their specific concerns.Mending the Broken Bond: The 90-Day Answer to Developing a Loving Relationship with Your Child Overview

HappyBaby: The Organic Guide to Baby's First 24 Months ReviewI was really excited to see this book. I am a certified nutrition educator (holistic nutrition), LLL leader, a new IBCLC, retired API leader, and mother of 4. I am also a big fan of Dr. William Sears' "The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood" and "The NDD Book".
Overall, this is a very good book that I would recommend to new moms, with a few caveats. First, they have good breastfeeding information and discuss why using an IBCLC is important, but they did not consult or include an IBCLC in the writing process. They encourage moms to wait until 6 months to start solids (which is best practice and evidence-based) and they give tips on how to delay solids for the 4-5 month old who is eyeing the plates at dinner (I loved that). However, they advocate starting with highly processed cereals (which just happen to be made by the HappyBaby company, who wrote the book). Many holistic nutritionists believe in the value of sticking with whole foods, such as avocado or banana, as first foods and believe that processed cereals (even organic ones) are not necessarily healthy choices.
After reading the book, I noticed all the HappyBaby organic processed food products at my local Whole Foods. It is not my place to debate the merits of these products (which do contain many good ingredients), but I think it is important in a book review to point out the product tie-ins.
Overall, I do believe this is a good book and I am glad it was written. Having Dr. Robert Sears' name on it (loved his "The Vaccine Book") will help it to reach a wider audience. It is worth buying.HappyBaby: The Organic Guide to Baby's First 24 Months Overview

The Guide to Dating for Teenagers With Asperger Syndrome ReviewI would give this book 2.5 to 3 stars out of a possible 5. I'm glad I found it on a bargain table, as I do not believe it is worth the full-price of $20. Despite the title, the book was not truly a book written for Aspies, but one which would be helpful for the general population. Books written by individuals on the autistic spectrum, or which at least include personal stories written by individuals on the spectrum would be far more useful.
The author suggests using this book as a currciulum to be studied by parents and teens together. A better strategy might be for the parent to read the book first, post-it note sections which might need additional clarification or input (for example, a "Let's talk about this one" on the section on masturbation so you can discuss house rules or religious/moral views which have an influence), an the offer that the teen can feel free to ask you any questions or share any thoughts which arise while reading the book. This makes the book less of a chore and more of a reference/resource.

The Company You Keep: The Transforming Power of Male Friendship ReviewSeldom does one find a book on such a topic! I commend the author for taking the issue of male friendship to this level of visibility and discussion. I also admire the courage, transparency and vulnerability of the author. I have learned a lot through his personal experiences. His message that men seldom bond at a level other than a superficial one, resonated with me. As a corporate/executive coach, I have seen and experienced what the author describes as society's emphasis on self-suffiency in both corporate and private life. To take an excerpt from the book, "In today's business environment, we see that the assumption still exists that the strong, successful man is the man who gets the job done on his own (the John Wayne ideal). In our technology-crazed world, his job is to harness his laptop, saddle up his Blackberry or Palm Pilot, and charge into the day with his cell phone attached to his ear." Well, you get the point... The author presents convincing evidence that men can create and nurture supportive and transformational friendships. When reading this book, prepare yourself for a journey into the intellectual, emotional and spiritual facets of your life -- a journey that is relived through the eyes of a very successful entrepreneur and corporate executive. Reading the book has inspired and challenged me to re-evaluate and attempt to re-create my friendships in terms of the author's life experiences and recommendations. Enjoy the read! The Company You Keep: The Transforming Power of Male Friendship Overview

Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide ReviewDo you have a son or daughter recently diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (AS)? If so, then buy this book now. I wish this book had been available four years ago when our son was diagnosed with AS. I searched for every book available to understand AS, and if this had been available then, what a treasure it would have been to find. Now that it is published, I feel that everyone who advocates for a son or daughter with AS should buy and use the insights this book has to offer. There are many. Written by an expert familiar with AS, the style gives enough technical information while still being easy to read. There are parts you will laugh outloud reading, recognizing the similarities to your own child. You will learn about the great diversity in symptoms that kids with AS can experience, and those that they share with most of their peers. Worried about the future success of your child, family issues, school performance? There's are entire chapters on these issues and more. There's a helpful "Question and Answer" section in the back of the book, and one of the best sections is the Resources, that you can access to learn more. I have bought several copies of this excellent book- for my wife and me, my parents, for our son's school, his para, and some of our friends- so that they will have a comprehensive and excellent resource to draw upon when the question arises, "What's Asperger Syndrome? How can we help (insert your son's or daughter's name here)?"Asperger Syndrome and Your Child: A Parent's Guide Overview

Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids ReviewIf you want to do more than: raise an "okay" kid, in a grow-up, get-a-job, basically-decent-person sort of sense, then this book is for you! This book is about raising your children to be all God wants them to be (i.e. SAINTS!) and gives parents very practical suggestions on how to accomplish this. The author also cites numerous writings by our Holy Father and other esteemed Catholics that promote a parenting style in line with the values and ideals of the Catholic Church. This book specifically encourages the idea of attatchment parenting,(in a society that seems to practice de-tatchment parenting),which I found very gratifying since my husband and I try to do that anyway -and again the author cites specific Catholic sources to reinforce this viewpoint.I also think the author's appendix in the back about why he can't spank, and his critical examination of corporal punishment is one of the best Christian arguments against spanking that I have read. I can't say enough about how much I love this book! While the bookstores are stocked with many books on how not to let your children manipulate you (i.e. Babywise and others), and how to make your children fit into your lifestyle(instead of re-arranging yours to put your children first), this book is a refreshing and timely reminder that children are a gift from God and as such, deserve to be parented in a way fitting of their dignity as a human being! I intend to give it as a gift to the Catholic parents that I know. Do yourself a favor and buy one for yourself and one for a friend- they (and their children) will thank you for it!Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids Overview

A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies and a Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism ReviewMy son was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 4. I was lucky enough to have a friend recommend I attend a conference dealing with Applied Behavioral Analysis(ABA). During the break I wandered through the hundreds of books available for purchase in the lobby. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed.
Surrounded by parents of Autistic children, caregivers, special education teachers and psychologists, I decided to ask for help. Each person I asked "which is the best book to buy first?" pointed to "A work in progress".
2 years later this is the book I recommend to anyone interested in learning about ABA, or implementing a behavioral program for their child.
From toilet training to social skills, how to teach imaginative play to basic conversations, Ron Leaf left no stone unturned.
The instructions, explanations and examples are clear and concise. You will learn about ABA and how to implement a home program with this easy to use guide. For professionals and novices alike, this book will be a tremendous help. Though we have moved on to the more advanced "Teach me language", "A work in progress" is always close at hand.
"Nothing is impossible, some things just require more steps"A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies and a Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism Overview

Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect ReviewI highly recommend this book for all parents or caregivers of boys, but especially if you have a boy with learning or attention problems (ADHD). This book not only gives very practical, realistic advice about how to understand your son if he is shy or withdrawn, but also provides great insight into why he may be reluctant to talk and how to bring him out. For many kids with learning disabilities and ADHD, the academic aspect gets focussed on but there can also be social problems at school and in the family. This book addresses both school and family issues, but we found the psychological insights to be extremely helpful in understanding why a fifth-grade boy would be having more trouble in school at this age, and also why he would talk about hobbies and technical things but couldn't tell us why he was getting upset. This book has also helped us understand an older teenager--and know when to step in and when it was fine to give him more space. When communication improves, behavior and respect tend to improve also. We've read some other "self-help" books but this was the first one that seemed to cover all our areas of concern. It's not filled with technical language but it was a "smarter" book than most we've read. Dr. Cox obviously knows about boys and understands what the day to day reality of most families is like. Despite the title, which might imply it's only for "quiet boys," it should be required reading for every parent of boys! We wish we had read this book sooner.Boys of Few Words: Raising Our Sons to Communicate and Connect Overview
