Scaredy Dog Understanding and Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog ReviewAfter being at my wits' end trying to figure out just what was going on in the head of my scaredy-dog, I picked up Brown's book. On page after page, she described behaviors I was seeing develop, and offered solutions to those behaviors.
Fortunately for me, my dog is not as scared as the ones she describes were. That said, many of the techniques she outlines have been saving graces for me. Most importantly, I now use a crate in the car when I drive with my dog. No more barking wildly at buses, motorcycles, other dogs, and trolleys! No more trying to clamber out the window after those offensive pieces of machinery! I have no more fear about how my dog is going to act in the car, and she has a lot more security while being in the car.
There are many other strategies I will consider using with my scaredy dog. If your dog is the kind of dog who reacts unpredictably in a wide variety of situations and you want to keep your dog, other dogs, and other people safe around your dog, this book provides a strong and solid base from which to begin your work. I was lucky enough to have a friend recommend I attend a conference dealing with Applied Behavioral Analysis(ABA). During the break I wandered through the hundreds of books available for purchase in the lobby. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed.
Surrounded by parents of Autistic children, caregivers, special education teachers and psychologists, I decided to ask for help. Each person I asked "which is the best book to buy first?" pointed to "A work in progress".
2 years later this is the book I recommend to anyone interested in learning about ABA, or implementing a behavioral program for their child.
From toilet training to social skills, how to teach imaginative play to basic conversations, Ron Leaf left no stone unturned.
The instructions, explanations and examples are clear and concise. You will learn about ABA and how to implement a home program with this easy to use guide. For professionals and novices alike, this book will be a tremendous help. Though we have moved on to the more advanced "Teach me language", "A work in progress" is always close at hand.

Understanding Body Language (Barron's Business Success) ReviewGiven the price, I was a little shocked at the diminutive size of this paperback. It only has 98 pages and it's packed with illustrations and bullet items. Word count is probably in the 15,000 to 20,000 range, so I guess we're paying for the "Barron's" name rather than content.
Anyway, on to content:
The first chapter was probably the best. It had some interesting information on body language, the senses and Neurolinguistic Programming. The authors talk about "visual thinkers" and "kinesthetic thinkers" and explain how to recognize the different types and adjust your body language accordingly.
The rest of the book has pretty basic stuff: "Anger tends to be conveyed by leaning forward, sometimes with fist clenched..." But there are enough insightful observations and quirky tidbits sprinkled about to make the chapters interesting. The authors also spend time on how body language (epically hand gestures) differs in meaning from one part of the world to the next. Neat stuff there.
So all-in-all it was an interesting read, but based on the word count and content it should be priced in the $3.95 range rather than $8.95.

Reading People: How to Understand People and Predict Their Behavior--Anytime, Anyplace ReviewI find it interesting that reviewers either loved this book or hated it. I think when read in its entirety, and not as a cookbook to human behavior, it is most helpful and thoughtful. I took from this book the importance of not stereotyping or jumping to conclusions about people. Rather, the authors convincingly state reasons for looking for patterns, observing what people do and say, truly listening to others and projecting to others what you really mean to project. I think the disappointed reviewers who made comments here were looking for ways to make snap judgments and fulfilled their own negative expectations. I was looking for insight and ways to avoid making snap judgments and I found them. Thank you to the authors. The book is written for the business world but what you learn can be applied in your own personal life as well. The first thing that you realize is that it is very difficult to fake and manipulate what your body is going to communicate. The book will not be very helpful for those seeking to learn how to use body language to give different or false messages than are in your heart. The book does give you greater insights on how to read others at meetings, or in one-on-one-situations. In some cases, this book will act like a Rosetta Stone for those who are clueless as to what the body is saying about each of us.
Goman uses wonderful personal examples that are easy to identify with. The reader will be able to recognize themselves and others as she takes them through a learning experience that will enrich their work and personal lives. The book is well written and easy to read. I could see this book being used for groups and companies as part of any communications-training program.
This book will change you and alter the way you look at people. It will make you think and reflect and perhaps wake you up and change how you perceive others and yourself. It is a profound work that is scientifically grounded and not some new-age feel good effort to say what has already been said. This book manages to break some new ground while pulling together lots of known and accepted theories of nonverbal communication.
This book receives my highest personal endorsement and recommendation. This book belongs on every serious business manager's office shelf.

Understanding Parrot Body Language DVD, vol 3 - Barbara Heidenreich ReviewUnderstanding that all responsible animal owners could feel vulnerable when it comes to finding help, especially through a DVD, rest assured when you buy anything by Barbara Heidenreich. There is no fancy editing (suggesting a false TAH DAH!!!! moment) or promises of things you can't do on your own.
To be honest: I am a mammal person. I am much more verse in watching tails or ears to understand the animal's "language". I know that working with animals it is ALL about timing, not ever taking out anger on my animals, and I know having a parrot can be challenging.
However now that I have watched Barbara's DVD on Parrot Body Language (and even before watching it for a second time) I am so much more aware of subtle moves that our new Yellow-Naped Amazon Parrot has been offering.
Not only is he not biting because I am not threatening him but also our bird is MUCH happier with my not harassing him (through mis-understanding his "hints").
As soon as Ms. Heidenreich makes the next DVD I will be at the front of the cue to buy and watch it......making both our parrot's and our lives much richer and better together.
Thanks to Barbara Heidenreich and her continued work dedicated to birds!!!
