Scaredy Dog Understanding and Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog ReviewAfter being at my wits' end trying to figure out just what was going on in the head of my scaredy-dog, I picked up Brown's book. On page after page, she described behaviors I was seeing develop, and offered solutions to those behaviors.
Fortunately for me, my dog is not as scared as the ones she describes were. That said, many of the techniques she outlines have been saving graces for me. Most importantly, I now use a crate in the car when I drive with my dog. No more barking wildly at buses, motorcycles, other dogs, and trolleys! No more trying to clamber out the window after those offensive pieces of machinery! I have no more fear about how my dog is going to act in the car, and she has a lot more security while being in the car.
There are many other strategies I will consider using with my scaredy dog. If your dog is the kind of dog who reacts unpredictably in a wide variety of situations and you want to keep your dog, other dogs, and other people safe around your dog, this book provides a strong and solid base from which to begin your work. All Dogs Need Some Training ReviewThis book is a book for anyone who wants a great, loving dog, that is well trained. It explained how to teach your dog the easiest of tasks, like the sit, come, stay, and many more. One option this book had that many other dog training books don't have is a complete chapter on what to play with your dog, and an advanced training section. If you want a dog, that is reliable, good, and intelligent this book is great to read. I did find some of the ways to train your dog physcological, but in the end, it made a ton of sense, and made you think, "Why didn't I think of that?" The illistrations also made it even more understanding, because they showed you what the book ment if you didn't quite understand a segment. Presentation Skills Training (ASTD Trainer's Workshop) ReviewI recently had to put together my first "Train the Trainer" one hour session for a management level group at an engineering firm. This book and the accompanying cd were invaluable.
It would be easy to do a two day seminar using all the tools laid out; it's just as easy to pick and choose as I did for a series of shorter seminars. All of the handouts and slides on the cd are easily customizable to add in your company's logo.
I got great reviews on my first session thanks to this guide (and an average survey rating of 4.6 on a scale of 1 - 5). I will be doing the same class for a THIRD time next week for another group due to word of mouth from the first session. Get Connected with Your Dog: Emphasizing the Relationship While Training Your Dog ReviewWhile I haven't read the entire book yet, I have read parts of it and have also watched the DVD. I respectfully disagree with reviewer Swissy Mom; her review very nearly prevented me from purchasing the book. I'm glad it did not.
Ms. Aloff is using a method of communication with which dogs are familiar by nature: body language and space. I did not get the impression at all that she was ignoring the dogs' reactions to her movements and behavior. In fact, she understands that, under certain circumstances, dogs are uncomfortable with being handled and unsure (to start with) about what is expected. But this is a part of learning new things. Many dogs react strongly to their first collar or head halter - this is not so different. Some discomfort is to be expected. Movements and handling were performed in a gentle and caring way. All of the dogs in the DVD relax noticeably and seem to begin to enjoy the process as their learning progresses.
I have a smart and wonderful but difficult adolescent dog. As a result, I've done a great deal of reading about various training theories/methods in addition to participating with him in a number of courses. While I understand that space management is important when working with dogs, this is the first comprehensive guide I've found that uses this as a foundation for training, offering individual exercises and a step-by-step approach to each of them, including various key movements/behaviors in your dog that should influence your responses while you help him/her to understand what you want him/her to do. These are called out in the DVD as well. There are also modifiers for dogs who are timid or excitable.
What is most encouraging to me about this approach is what Ms. Aloff describes as getting your dog to use his/her forebrain (thinking about what your communication means and how he should respond) rather than his/her hindbrain (reacting to what you are doing - whether that is offering a treat as a lure or giving an appropriate physical correction). Please note that I am not disparaging other training methods. It is simply useful to have a means of communication with dogs that they already understand on many levels. I'm hopeful this will enable me to teach my dog that he is capable of self-control and help us learn to read and understand each other better. I'll update this review when I have more information.
The only minor negative thing I can say about this is that the DVD I received is a bit grainy. Perhaps that is just my copy, or even my old DVD player. But the content is an extremely helpful complement to the book.

Outwitting Dogs: Revolutionary Techniques For Dog Training That Work ReviewIn the growing library of truly *positive* training books, this one is at the front of the class. This book is clearly written for the every-person who wants a well-mannered dog in their life without having to go to college first to understand the instructions. I LOVE training theory, but that's my personal quirk, and not everybody has the time to remind themselves of the difference between negative punishment and negative reinforcement, or variable reinforcement versus interval...etc. etc. while their dog is chewing the sofa or barking her head off at the neighbors. Outwitting Dogs is written in straight-forward, simple but not simplistic language that is easy and pleasant to read.
Not only that, but it is organized *perfectly.* View the Table of Contents - you'll see a book organized not by commands, but by behaviors. Not, teach your dog to sit/down/stay/heel because that's what show dogs need to know, but teach your dog to sit in _this_ context because it helps you get _this_ result. We teach dogs because we want to get (or to get rid of!) certain behaviors. This book is organized with those oh-so-important behaviors in mind.
The authors aren't stuck in a "one best way" mindset, either. They realize that not all methods work for all dogs, and give sound and proven alternatives that fit into your daily life. They don't expect you to be able to invite 20 friends over for a "puppy party." They tell you how, in day-to-day life, you can socialize, manage, and teach your dog the things s/he needs to know to succeed in a human world. Bravo!

The Leadership Training Activity Book: 50 Exercises for Building Effective Leaders ReviewI have been an educator and adult trainer for 30 years. I have a full library of activities books by Lois Hart. When building new classes (sometimes on the same topic, but with a different purpose) I continue to count on her manuals of activities as my most valuable reference materials. I highly recommend the Leadership Training Activity Book to trainers and educators who are responsible for curriculum development
According to all accelerated learning theory, adults learn best when actively involved in the topic. Therefore learning activities are very important when providing people experiential learning. Learning activities built around the subject matter helps them "get it" so that the concept "sticks" in their minds. I have been delighted with the materials I found in her books on developingl eaders and many others written by this author, Lois B. Hart.

It is difficult to create a totally new workshop to teach concepts and principles such as Leadership, Team building, and Management skills. I am grateful to find resources that have well thought-out learning exercises. I have been very happy to apply ideas and training techniques to help explain concepts from Hart's books.
As I've found with all her books, this newest book not only saves time developing the course, but provided fun, entertaining and interesting ways to make a point, explain how a method works, or give a true-to-life example. My supervisor, manager, and leader audiences have given very complimentary evaluations on classes I have developed around her activities.

I also recommend you buy her 50 Activities to Develop Leaders Vol I. Faultless Facilitation, Training Methods That Work, and Learning from Conflict. These save me many hours of preparation time because they have easy to follow instructions. The directions explain the objectives, provide a list of supplies required and tell me how much time the activity will take.
Furthermore, these books have provided inspiration. Sometimes I have adapted the ideas in the books and altered them. I have used them when training all types of groups with a variety of different levels of experience and knowledge. You won't be disappointed.

It is comforting to know that programs presented in these reference manuals are based on research and created by a knowledgeable professional who is an expert in the topic. Ms Davis shares her wealth of experience and knowledge about therapy dog work with her own three therapy dogs. Her gentle training techniques are explained in detail with many excellent photographs to illustrate her point, as well as, the dog psychology that she works on to produce effective therapy dogs who enjoy reaching out to heal and bring joy to children, nursing home residents and the ill. Both beginners and those with many years of experience will find much to learn and benefit from in this book.
Key sections cover helping you decide if you and your dog are suited to therapy work, developing your dog's social skills with people, tips for managing the visits, specific and detailed recommended training for therapy dogs as contrasted with competition obedience dogs, your responsibilities as the handler, and preventing potential injury to your dog and the people you visit.
Ms Davis is flexible and non-dogmatic throughout the book. Interesting discussions are developed on many issues such as whether or not to use treats, tricks, demonstrations, go in groups or individually and then whichever you choose - how to do either option with the best results.

Evaluating Training Programs: The Four Levels ReviewIf you expect to interact with those in the training industry, you had best be armed with knowledge of Kirkpatrick's four-level model. For instance, if someone asks, "What are you doing about Level IV?" you need to come back with a robust response such as, "Well, we evaluate the impact of training by....". Kirkpatrick first presented his model in 1959 in a series of articles in the Training and Development Journal. In this book, the Godfather of training evaluation succinctly outlines his four-level model of training measurement: measuring reaction, measuring learning, measuring behavior, and measuring results. This book is an up-to-date enhancement of his model. It consists of corporate examples, which are always helpful, and survey templates. If you are looking for a model to increase training effectiveness, reduce cycle time of design and development of courses, or establish baselines, this is a good primer. I praise him for consistently encouraging formative evaluation. Less seasoned training professionals only conduct summative evaluation (Level 1-smiley sheets), but evaluation should not be seen as an event as much as a life-cycle process. The ISD process includes a formative evaluation approach, which is often over looked. If you read this book and measure all four levels, you will be on the right track to evaluation utopia.
If you are a serious evaluator or interested in calculating return on investment, a "must read" is Jack Phillips Return on Investment in Training and Performance Improvement Programs. Phillips expands Kirkpatrick's models to a fifth level, which is return on investment (ROI), and encourages ROI at Kirkpatrick's four levels, too. If you are interested in implementing Kirkpatrick's four-level model and/or ROI, you need to read Another Look at Evaluation Training Programs. This book is a series of "best practice" articles compiled by Kirkpatrick.
One final note: Keep in mind that Kirkpatrick's model is not the only one out there. For instance, there is: Kaufman's Five Levels of Evaluation, The CIRO (context, input, reaction, and outcome) Approach, Stufflebeams's CIPP (context, input, process, and product) Model, Alkins' UCLA Model, and The Phillips Five-Level ROI Framework.
