I ordered 20 to give to every person I know who owns (or is owned by) a dog . It is a what-to-do AND how-to-think for dog owners, those who are home with their dogs and those who are not.. The bottom line is that the two most important things a dog owner has to do is establish, with the dog, a common language, and then make the dog a useful, working member of the family. When dogs are clear about their jobs and what you expect of them, a happy household is the result. The stories in the book are great. Plus the book is funny, "Dogs who push their owners around in the house usually pull them around outside the house." Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, Vol. 2: Etiology and Assessment of Behavior Problems ReviewI would give this book five stars if it weren't for the level of difficulty in reading it...just had to take off a star for that reason alone. This isn't the book for the first time dog owner or casual trainer. It's a serious book for the well-versed student of dog behavior and training. Mr. Lindsay definitely knows what he's talking about but the reader must already have a fairly good grasp of the "concepts" behind his explanations in order to fully understand the material. It was a good read that I had trouble putting down, though! Dog Tips From DogTown: A Relationship Manual for You and Your Dog ReviewFirst a disclaimer... National Geographic sent me a free copy of this book to review. That said, I am taking the time to go to Amazon and write this review because I thought it was a great book with lots of important information that I haven't seen in other dog training books.
The authors spend a lot of time up front discussing the responsibility of owning a dog and how to choose if a dog is even right for you and what kind to get. Great! Too many people get a dog without thinking things through. There is an excellent section on dog body language as well.
What I liked best is that the authors continued to say that you need to work with the dog you have, not the dog you wish you had. They clearly outline the basics of training manners, housebreaking, and some of the mistakes that can be made in those areas.
The layout and editing are good too. The book is set in bite sized sections with bold faced headings so you can skip around if you like, but I read it cover to cover. The writing has a good flow and there are little tidbits scattered throughout like this "At Best Friends, some adopters mistakenly believe their dogs will feel thankful for being rescued and taken to forever homes. Although the dog understands the value of a warm house and big backyard, she won't credit the adopter with the change and immediately show her gratitude by obeying every cue or signal."
I was only going to give 4 stars but then I couldn't think of any reason why a dog owner or lover wouldn't get something out of the book regardless of your training experience, so 5 it is.Dog Tips From DogTown: A Relationship Manual for You and Your Dog Overview

Scaredy Dog Understanding and Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog ReviewAfter being at my wits' end trying to figure out just what was going on in the head of my scaredy-dog, I picked up Brown's book. On page after page, she described behaviors I was seeing develop, and offered solutions to those behaviors.
Fortunately for me, my dog is not as scared as the ones she describes were. That said, many of the techniques she outlines have been saving graces for me. Most importantly, I now use a crate in the car when I drive with my dog. No more barking wildly at buses, motorcycles, other dogs, and trolleys! No more trying to clamber out the window after those offensive pieces of machinery! I have no more fear about how my dog is going to act in the car, and she has a lot more security while being in the car.
There are many other strategies I will consider using with my scaredy dog. If your dog is the kind of dog who reacts unpredictably in a wide variety of situations and you want to keep your dog, other dogs, and other people safe around your dog, this book provides a strong and solid base from which to begin your work. It explained how to teach your dog the easiest of tasks, like the sit, come, stay, and many more. One option this book had that many other dog training books don't have is a complete chapter on what to play with your dog, and an advanced training section. If you want a dog, that is reliable, good, and intelligent this book is great to read. I did find some of the ways to train your dog physcological, but in the end, it made a ton of sense, and made you think, "Why didn't I think of that?" The illistrations also made it even more understanding, because they showed you what the book ment if you didn't quite understand a segment. It is full of down-to-earth, authoritative advice that you won't find in any other dog training book. Noting the fact that a stay in even the best run shelter can be traumatic for a dog, he explains how to give such a dog the extra care and attention it needs. He also offers sensible guidelines for assessing whether you are a good candidate to adopt a dog from a shelter. Not everyone has the wherewithal to give a dog the extra TLC it can need after an experience in a shelter, and the rates at which adopted dogs are returned to shelters bears this out. For the right person, however, as Dale Stavroff encouragingly says, a shelter dog can be a great choice.
When it comes to training a dog from a shelter, or a dog from a breeder, you couldn't ask for a better guide than Dale Stavroff. Get Connected with Your Dog: Emphasizing the Relationship While Training Your Dog ReviewWhile I haven't read the entire book yet, I have read parts of it and have also watched the DVD. I respectfully disagree with reviewer Swissy Mom; her review very nearly prevented me from purchasing the book. I'm glad it did not.
Ms. Aloff is using a method of communication with which dogs are familiar by nature: body language and space. I did not get the impression at all that she was ignoring the dogs' reactions to her movements and behavior. In fact, she understands that, under certain circumstances, dogs are uncomfortable with being handled and unsure (to start with) about what is expected. But this is a part of learning new things. Many dogs react strongly to their first collar or head halter - this is not so different. Some discomfort is to be expected. Movements and handling were performed in a gentle and caring way. All of the dogs in the DVD relax noticeably and seem to begin to enjoy the process as their learning progresses.
I have a smart and wonderful but difficult adolescent dog. As a result, I've done a great deal of reading about various training theories/methods in addition to participating with him in a number of courses. While I understand that space management is important when working with dogs, this is the first comprehensive guide I've found that uses this as a foundation for training, offering individual exercises and a step-by-step approach to each of them, including various key movements/behaviors in your dog that should influence your responses while you help him/her to understand what you want him/her to do. These are called out in the DVD as well. There are also modifiers for dogs who are timid or excitable.
What is most encouraging to me about this approach is what Ms. Aloff describes as getting your dog to use his/her forebrain (thinking about what your communication means and how he should respond) rather than his/her hindbrain (reacting to what you are doing - whether that is offering a treat as a lure or giving an appropriate physical correction). Please note that I am not disparaging other training methods. It is simply useful to have a means of communication with dogs that they already understand on many levels. I'm hopeful this will enable me to teach my dog that he is capable of self-control and help us learn to read and understand each other better. I'll update this review when I have more information.
The only minor negative thing I can say about this is that the DVD I received is a bit grainy. Perhaps that is just my copy, or even my old DVD player. But the content is an extremely helpful complement to the book.

This book is clearly written for the every-person who wants a well-mannered dog in their life without having to go to college first to understand the instructions. I LOVE training theory, but that's my personal quirk, and not everybody has the time to remind themselves of the difference between negative punishment and negative reinforcement, or variable reinforcement versus interval...etc. etc. while their dog is chewing the sofa or barking her head off at the neighbors. Outwitting Dogs is written in straight-forward, simple but not simplistic language that is easy and pleasant to read.
Not only that, but it is organized *perfectly.* View the Table of Contents - you'll see a book organized not by commands, but by behaviors. Not, teach your dog to sit/down/stay/heel because that's what show dogs need to know, but teach your dog to sit in _this_ context because it helps you get _this_ result. We teach dogs because we want to get (or to get rid of!) certain behaviors. This book is organized with those oh-so-important behaviors in mind.
The authors aren't stuck in a "one best way" mindset, either. They realize that not all methods work for all dogs, and give sound and proven alternatives that fit into your daily life. They don't expect you to be able to invite 20 friends over for a "puppy party." They tell you how, in day-to-day life, you can socialize, manage, and teach your dog the things s/he needs to know to succeed in a human world. Bravo!

My husband and I are big time dog lovers with three of our own. We have owned many dogs over the years and many of them have been rescued dogs. There is always a story behind a rescue animal. It was with great interest that I picked up the latest book by Elise Lufkin with photographs by Diana Walker called TO THE RESCUE, Found Dogs with a Mission.
Within the pages of this work you will find many stories of rescue dogs, their owners and how the dogs have made a difference in the lives of many. Ms. Lufkin starts her stories with Bailey, a golden retriever, who was almost starved to death before he was rescued by a victim's advocate, specializing in child abuse who ultimately trained Bailey as a cadaver dog. One of Bailey's jobs was working the remains of the horrific 9/11 disaster.
She continues on with great stories of rescued dogs in ever breed who have found themselves working within their respective communities in varied occupations. Whether they are working as therapy dogs with children, the elderly or those who are hospitalized, these dogs have been taken from terrible conditions, loved and they in return have shown their appreciation by servicing those in need.
The stories in this work are beautifully, but simply told. The pictures are heartwarming and thoughtful images that will warm the reader's heart.
Any dog owner will enjoy this book and will find themselves nodding in agreement and smiling throughout the reading process. It is a great book to share with others and would make a great gift for any occasion. The author shows us why we should give credit where credit is due to a species that surpasses us with some of their abilities. The one review here was so negative---if you read his reviews he often gives one star to books that show an appreciation for dogs. I doubt he even read the book. He's so negative about this type of book, who would he have purchased a copy? I don't like writing reviews but had to speak up. Ms Davis shares her wealth of experience and knowledge about therapy dog work with her own three therapy dogs. Her gentle training techniques are explained in detail with many excellent photographs to illustrate her point, as well as, the dog psychology that she works on to produce effective therapy dogs who enjoy reaching out to heal and bring joy to children, nursing home residents and the ill. Both beginners and those with many years of experience will find much to learn and benefit from in this book.
Key sections cover helping you decide if you and your dog are suited to therapy work, developing your dog's social skills with people, tips for managing the visits, specific and detailed recommended training for therapy dogs as contrasted with competition obedience dogs, your responsibilities as the handler, and preventing potential injury to your dog and the people you visit.
Ms Davis is flexible and non-dogmatic throughout the book. Interesting discussions are developed on many issues such as whether or not to use treats, tricks, demonstrations, go in groups or individually and then whichever you choose - how to do either option with the best results.

I had owned many dogs over the years, and thought I knew what I was doing when it came to training, but once we began adopting Cesar's methods it put everything in a new perspective. Cesar teaches you how to be the pack leader, and it is miraculous the impact it has on the dog. He helps you understand dogs, and once you do it becomes very easy to mold them into the ideal pet and companion. And his mantra of "calm assertive energy" is a great lesson for life - not just in how you interact with your pet. Using his methods we have molded our puppy into a terrific, happy, disciplined, calm companion - and I now have the best relationship I have ever had with an animal. I strongly recommend this series for anyone that has a dog or is considering getting a dog - or even if you have to interact with dogs. In fact, before learning from Cesar my wife was afraid of dogs, and now that she understands them it has added a new dimension to her life and alleviated all her fears.
