Girls Under the Umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorders: Practical Solutions for Addressing Everyday Challenges ReviewWhat a refreshing perspective this book offers by focusing on girls under the autism spectrum. I found it fascinating and shocking while reading this book to discover that their may be a vast number of undiagnosed girls flying under the proverbial radar due to how society views gender differences which could affect whether or not a girl is diagnosed with autism versus being viewed as shy and/or eccentric. This book does many things including discussing that "the underdiagnosing of girls with ASD is due to our reliance on male prototype of autism, whereby diagnosis is based on behaviors that are more extreme in how they present themselves to the clinician or educator."
In addition to the interesting topic of gender difference in ASD and how it presents, this book is a "scrapbook" or journal of personal journeys from the perspective of young and young at heart ladies on the autism spectrum...the challenges they have faced, their hurdles and successes. It brings a unique insight into the world of autism from a girl's point of view.
The book is also a great resource including an appendix full of suggestions, checklists, plans, resources, etc. to help parents help their daughters navigate through the world of IEPs, advocacy and social skills. An even more important resource comes from the women who are advocating for these young ladies and are living examples to what those with autism can do with their life and suggestions on how to succeed...for example from Temple Grandin and Zosia Zaks.
I would highly suggest this book for a parent with a daughter who has been diagnosed with autism and/or a young lady who would like to further understand her autism. Also, teachers and para-professionals would learn a LOT from this book and it's a quick read full of information.
The "icing on the cake" was the wonderful painting and poem by Amanda, a fine young lady with autism.

It took me 2 years to research materials to write this book. I read old and current science, medical, and popular books. I read old and new science papers (science reports published in professional science journals), so I could comprehend how our understanding of the syndromes has changed in time. I interviewed scientists, doctors, and parents. I listened to recorded interviews of individuals with the syndromes and interacted with a few of them personally. I wanted to have a comprehensive perpective of the syndromes and bring it to my YA and adult readers in a clear, simple, but profound way. Here you will be introduced to many individuals with the syndromes and their typical behaviors. You will get the latest on what scientists and doctors consider are the probable causes, how to diagnose and treat it, and what are scientists doing now to improve our understanding. I have not forgoten the parents who have played a crucial role bringing awareness of the syndromes to all of us and whose efforts have translated into more research and support for the families, although much more help is still needed. Build Your Own Life: A Self-Help Guide For Individuals With Asperger Syndrome ReviewAs an adult with Asperger Syndrome, I thought this book would be exactly what I was looking for to help me. The title sounds great and the table of contents looked great too, and it was written by another woman with AS. But I was very disappointed when I got the book and started reading it. The whole book is an extended metaphor (and if you know anything about AS, you know that metaphors can confuse us). I understood the main point of this metaphor (your life is a house or building), but some of the other points (plumbing, electricity, etc.) totally confused me. I had trouble forming the connections to understand what the author was talking about. I also found that some of the subheadings within the book would say one thing and the text that followed seemed to be on a completely different topic and/or did not say anything very helpful (at least for me). I have read many, many books and articles on AS (I am also a graduate student), and there are much better and more helpful books available. When I found this book, I was thrilled. Firstly, it suggested games for working on helping him stay focused so that he would eventually play other games. Then it gave ideas for helping with his rigidity so he'd be more willing to play with me. The most important aspect of this book is its emphasis on working with your specific child's motivations. If your child is obsessed with Barney and needs to work on speaking clearly it contains games that show you how to combine Barney with your speaking clearly goal. It is clear, easy-to-read, and contains helpful lists of supplies and variations for the games. It gave me the skills to turn my vague goal of wanting to play with my son into a reality. I am now excited every time I sit down with him as I know know what to do. Asperger Syndrome in the Family Redefining Normal: Redefining Normal ReviewIt wasn't until I read this book that I finally understood some of what my Asperger's son is going through. Although I have read many clinically oriented books, and I cognitively understood what was going on, it was this book that helped me to emotionally understand him.
This book led me to level with his siblings about his problem and add them to his support team rather than leaving them in the wake of his embarassing behavior and telling them to leave him alone. This book spoke very powerfully about needing and giving comfort to those who are scared -- and all of us are scared of something sometime. The author spoke convincingly of comfort packs that a person can take with them if they anticipate stress and need to be calmed. After reading that, I looked quite differently at my teenagers' Walkmans and my Asperger's son's unusual choice of modern equivalents to his old security blanket.
This book had a very positive effect on how my family has responded to all of our children, but especially my son with Asperger's.
The fact that this book was written by someone with Asperger's has another impact: hope for a supportive and fullfilling adult life for my son.
I would recommend this book to someone who is somewhat familier with the disorder. It wouldn't be the first book to read, but maybe the second or third.Asperger Syndrome in the Family Redefining Normal: Redefining Normal Overview

The Guide to Dating for Teenagers With Asperger Syndrome ReviewI would give this book 2.5 to 3 stars out of a possible 5. I'm glad I found it on a bargain table, as I do not believe it is worth the full-price of $20. Despite the title, the book was not truly a book written for Aspies, but one which would be helpful for the general population. Books written by individuals on the autistic spectrum, or which at least include personal stories written by individuals on the spectrum would be far more useful.
The author suggests using this book as a currciulum to be studied by parents and teens together. A better strategy might be for the parent to read the book first, post-it note sections which might need additional clarification or input (for example, a "Let's talk about this one" on the section on masturbation so you can discuss house rules or religious/moral views which have an influence), an the offer that the teen can feel free to ask you any questions or share any thoughts which arise while reading the book. This makes the book less of a chore and more of a reference/resource.

Written by an expert familiar with AS, the style gives enough technical information while still being easy to read. Employment for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome or Non-Verbal Learning Disability: Stories and Strategies ReviewThis book is a very organized employment guide for people with Asperger Syndrome or Non Verbal Learning Disability (AS/NLD) and their friends. It would also be an excellent resource for Vocational Rehabilitation professionals, enabling them to understand these often misunderstood neurological disorders.

After retiring at 63 years of age from a career as an Electronic Engineer I did some research on my lifelong weaknesses. I discovered I had a Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD) and ran across this book. Having NLD meant that although I was very good at challenging and creative tasks I couldn't easily do things that most people take for granted like folding paper. As one person quoted in the book says, "I am generally quicker than others catching up with all sorts of knowledge and skills that require analytical understanding but I need much more time to get used to different telephones or copiers and to know where to find what."
I wish I had access to this kind of book when I was working. I read it eagerly from cover to cover.

The book, written by someone with NLD, covers the gamut and includes descriptions of what AS and NLD is, biographies of actual people with NLD and AS including what jobs worked for them at what didn't, and information for the AS/NLD person on how to plan a career, how to look for a job and how to function on the job.
Included are lists of resources including organizations and websites.
The book would also be useful for employers who could benefit from the strengths of AS/NLD people and would be willing to accommodate for their small weaknesses. As stated in the book: "Projects that allow the employee to use his/her creativity and problem-solving skills are best. Employers should value the individual's laser-like concentration ability and understand and respect these employees' work style."

The instructions, explanations and examples are clear and concise. You will learn about ABA and how to implement a home program with this easy to use guide. For professionals and novices alike, this book will be a tremendous help. Though we have moved on to the more advanced "Teach me language", "A work in progress" is always close at hand.

It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success ReviewWriting as someone who has lived with learning disabilities for nearly 50 years now, I cannot say strongly enough that I sincerely wish all of my teachers and parents had read this book. I will go a little further than that---I wish the pastoral counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrists that I have dealt with as an adult would read this book.
This book brought back memory after memory of times that I have been misunderstood (and rejected) by those around me, and also times that I have greatly misunderstood social and job-related incidents (and acted inappropriately as a result). Some of the long-lasting psychological damage that I have had as a result could have been alieviated if only those around me had been aware of the difficulties that I was having (and continue to have).
Notice that I did not say that the misunderstandings and social errors I make would have stopped. I don't think they would have.
The book does not offer any cure-alls. Its biggest contribution is to increase the understanding of the social ramifications of learning disabilities. The Hidden Curriculum: Practical Solutions for Understanding Unstated Rules in Social Situations ReviewOne of the missing components to the concept of teaching "social skills" to children and young adults on the autism spectrum, is that instructors focus on textbook manners instead of teaching REAL life practical knowledge. The Hidden Curriculum explains that every society has unstated rules, the things that no one explains to you, but which you are supposed to pick up somehow on your own. Remember how awkward and geeky most of us were in Jr. High? And there were always the "cool kids" who somehow knew just how to dress, just what to say and meanwhile you (and I) were clueless? It's because they understood the unstated rules, they had an unkanny ability to pick up the exact tools necessary for "coolness." As we grow up, we learn better how to adapt to social situations, we know how to behave in a variety of settings, even perhaps cross culturally. Adults grow into a sense of ease in our surroundings, we know what we are supposed to do. Now, imagine that you never got over that awkward phase, you were perpetually spending your life roaming around trying to figure out the world with little to go on. No one pulled you aside and explained, "This is how it is, Kid." That's exactly what it's like for our kids on the spectrum. Well, here comes The Hidden Curriculum to the rescue! Not only does it explain many of these "unstated rules" (many of which are humorous--who doesn't know you should take tuna in your school lunch because it stinks? many of our AS kids!) It also goes beyond to explain how to uncover them. It highlights how crucial it is for us as parents, as educators and just as a society to literally pull our AS folks aside and say, "These are the rules." For example, "Don't pick your nose." Good advice right? But p-leeeze, everybody picks their nose! (Okay, not me, but everybody else! :-) What we really need to teach our kids is not, don't pick your nose, but not to pick their nose where people can see them. Sound silly? Our children and friends on the autism spectrum just need for us to teach them one little tidbit like this every day and they'll find their way with increasing ease. And wouldn't you have liked someone to pull you aside in Jr. High and done the same for you? Let's equip our kids with the real skills to make their way in the world. The Hidden Curriculum does just that!

Kids will not only watch the "lessons" (which aren't long enough to lose their attention) but they will retain what they've learned. I loved the way a quick review is included in the next lesson, so you use (and therefore keep) what you just learned yesterday.
