The Secrets of Communication: Be Heard and Get Results ReviewThe man behind this book, Peter Thomson, really uses all the techniques mentioned in this book. I know because I've been lucky enough to meet him. He is a big, tall man who people quickly warm to because of his inherent `presence'. He naturally has a commanding air about him, which lends itself very well to his profession of speaking at seminars. Peter is very adept at knowing when to pause, when to speak and what to say to provoke `active' thought and `active listening'. He's also very tuned in to his audience, and can turn around a topical answer on the spot.
This book is a very comprehensive and gives fully explained examples of how to use the many different communication techniques available to all of us. It's true to say that the methods and ideas in the book are not so much secrets, as mysteries to most people. And that's why until they are fully explained and broken down into chunks of information, with such clarity and insight by the author, it is normally challenging to comprehend many of them.
I think beginners would probably feel more confident reading one chapter at a time and practising some of the techniques before using them `live'.The more competent communicators amongst you would certainly have no problems using the methods `live' first time.It is an unequivocal fact that everyone can certainly learn something new. You will also find it very useful to re-visit the book, time after time, especially as your confidence grows. You will come up with new thoughts and new ideas to try out.After all, Peter has been doing this for over twenty years and he still manages to keep his ideas fresh and up to date!The Secrets of Communication: Be Heard and Get Results Overview

The Guide to Dating for Teenagers With Asperger Syndrome ReviewI would give this book 2.5 to 3 stars out of a possible 5. I'm glad I found it on a bargain table, as I do not believe it is worth the full-price of $20. Despite the title, the book was not truly a book written for Aspies, but one which would be helpful for the general population. Books written by individuals on the autistic spectrum, or which at least include personal stories written by individuals on the spectrum would be far more useful.
The author suggests using this book as a currciulum to be studied by parents and teens together. A better strategy might be for the parent to read the book first, post-it note sections which might need additional clarification or input (for example, a "Let's talk about this one" on the section on masturbation so you can discuss house rules or religious/moral views which have an influence), an the offer that the teen can feel free to ask you any questions or share any thoughts which arise while reading the book. This makes the book less of a chore and more of a reference/resource.

The Bully in Your Relationship: Stand Up to Emotional Abuse and Get the Love You Deserve ReviewThe Bully in Your Relationship: Stop Emotional Abuse and Get the Love You Deserve by Anne-Renee Testa, Ph.D. is one of the most helpful books about emotional abuse available. This up-to-date guide is easy to read, if sometimes painful to digest, and comes across more like a counseling session than the usual impersonal textbooks on the topic.
Although the first half of The Bully details the types of bullies and the denial abused people employ to stay in damaging relationships, the second half makes it all worthwhile. Dr. Testa states, "This impressive body of knowledge you've gained gives you a solid foundation to stand on as you move forward. You know all about the bullying problem--backward, forward, upside down, and inside out. Now it's time for the solution: my A.R.T. Method."
The A.R.T. method: Acknowledge, Reassess, Take action is based on some of the principles underlying popular 12-step programs and includes workbook activities which will prove a boon to the person who has the suspicion that something may be terribly wrong with their relationship. Dr. Testa's A.R.T. method will help anyone in a bullying relationship take a fresh look at the bully in their lives, tame the bully that lies within them, and begin the slow, rewarding process of change that will ultimately give them the power to overcome their situation.
One important caveat: Dr. Testa does not acknowledge the real, physical danger some women (and men) face in violent relationships, and at one point states "Open up a space in your mind, and affirm the following...'I'm safe and secure...I'm not in any danger--the fear that I'm feeling right now is about the past, not the present.'" Most experts agree that while "doing it scared" is necessary to overcoming abuse, taking safety precautions can be vital: retaliation all too often results in physical attacks, lasting trauma, and sometimes, sadly, even death.The Bully in Your Relationship: Stand Up to Emotional Abuse and Get the Love You Deserve Overview

The Ten Conversations You Must Have Before You Get Married ReviewI have great communication skills with my clients...but as a couple, we never learned how to communicate. For me, the "Ten Conversations" you must have are perhaps a bit like reviewing a complicated business contract and hammering out the details. The real jewel of this book is the first 65 pages on the basics of good communication (something I missed along the way). My wife and I are finally discussing things that we have kept bottled up inside. Just ordered two copies for my married children. I wish we had this book 30 years ago! Secrets of Sexual Body Language ReviewBody language & non-verbal communication fascinate me, so I figured to love this book - Besides, from reading its title, I expected this book to be one up on secret sex stuff so how could I go wrong.
Unfortunately, no such information exists in this book - For what it's worth, the author's presentation is totally devoid of detail or information - On a scale of 1-100 rating subject content, this book is worth a 5 - Next to nothing on page after page after page.
For example, the author writes one statement about how someone's automobile is an extension of his body and therefore an important indicator of self image - Great, but that is the sum entirety of the author's comments in that area - No specifics, examples, analysis, nothing - Just knowing cars are important is good enough I guess - The whole book is that way.
The idea of an authoritative book relating body language to sexual content and non-verbal communication is a great idea - If the author knows anything of such matters, he should write one.Secrets of Sexual Body Language Overview

I Can Read You Like a Book: How to Spot the Messages and Emotions People Are Really Sending With Their Body Language ReviewMy first B.A. was in Interpersonal Communication, a large part of which involved nonverbal communication (aka body language). That was decades ago. Now I enjoy reading more recent information to get different opinions and updated theories.
This book is a huge disappointment. If you remove the generalized information such as making sure you understand what is normal for any given person before attempting to read his/her body language, you are unfortunately left with the author's egomaniacal biography. You even get to know how he has his hair cut (military flat top) and what kind of cowboy boots he wears (steel-toed), although neither applies to reading someone like a book. The author just really seems to want to talk about himself.
In one section, the reader is shown a photo of a man, woman, and child. You know, due to the author's own "baseline," that this is a family photo. Instead of simply explaining what the nonverbal communication in the picutre means, the author goes on for several pages describing the lives of each of the people in the photo. There is no reason for this; it has nothing to do with the point theoretically being made. We even get to hear about the "estranged grandfather." After the brief explanation of his posture, we are told that Grandpa "at the age of 35, went ashore on D-Day, with the 29th Infantry Division; to some extent, that earned him the right to look cocky." Huh? Do you want to hear that subjective bit of information, much less need to read it?
I'm sure Gregory Hartley really is a big ol' beer-guzzling macho guy who intimidates the daylights out of those he so proudly interrogates, but I personally find him so annoying I can only give very little credibility to the information in his book.
I've got a degree in the subject. I've taught the subject on campus and in seminars. There are other books out there for those who want to read the latest on nonverbal communication.
