Stop Being Manipulated ReviewI owe my sanity to this book. I was (am?) somebody who was manipulated by my co-workers, family, friends and even my wife. In desperation I picked and read this book. I have since defended myself and I feel much better about myself. As a matter of a fact my wife just tried to insult and bully me before I wrote this. I have neutralized the feelings of guilt and anger I used to feel and bounced it right back to her. I feel great, unfortunately she doesn't. One of the most important things the authors say is that in any manipulation is that the manipulator is actually paying you a compliment. The manipulator feels you are superior in some way to him or her. Upon knowing this, you objectively can deal with the manipulator and you can actually choose one of the five techniques they teach you. The techniques range from ignoring the attack to a complete reversal. These techniques stop the manipulation and the feeling it evokes dead in its tracks. Once you practice them a few times you will never look at a manipulation quite the same way. I was actually enjoying myself neutralizing my wifes attack. I believe everybody who is being bullied should carry this book. (According to the authors should is a bad word, it creates guilt and is one of the weapons of the manipulator and I don't want to be that.) To rephrase, If you are bullied get the book. I would of given the book 5 stars, but parts and passages of the book are not logically laid out and have to be re-read over to understand them. What the book doesn't have in style, it makes up for it in content. Overall, I feel indebted to the authors, I would love to talk to them or write them and tell them the difference they made in my life. I thoughroughly recommend it.......if your are being manipulated. If you are a manipulator, you SHOULD feel ashamed.Stop Being Manipulated Overview

This book talks about New Zealand's attempts to try something new. Using this process, juvenile's learn to admit to their wrongs, make restitution, and rejoin society, rather than deny it, get sent to the youth center and stew in their anger for months. Youth crime, thanks to this program, has dropped TREMENDOUSLY. How To Reduce Workplace Conflict And Stress: How Leaders And Their Employees Can Protect Their Sanity And Productivity From Tension And Turf Wars ReviewI just lived through a major work place blow-up with a co-worker whom I've always struggled to get along with. During the blow-up I was repeatedly verbally attacked and accused. I also lost my temper. Being totally devastated, I sought out answers and advice from my pile of waiting to be read professional development books. Maravelas' book was near the top of my pile, so I picked it up. I had purchased it last summer - never opened it up. From the start she was right on with the level of hostility I have witnessed, her description of how we react, and everything else she writes about. I took out my highlighter which I never have done except for course work. My book is now full of yellow highlights.
I felt so strongly about what I had learned, that I mentioned it to our HR rep (who was brought in due to the severity of the blow-up). I also got the courage up to ask my manager to read it. I have never done anything like that before. I felt though, that the more people in the organization who have read the book, the stronger and more effective we can make our organization. This book has definitely help heal some of the wounds caused by the caustic relationship I've had with this co-working. Do I believe that everything will be fine from now on? No, my co-worker has not read the book and would take offense were I to suggest it. That said, I now have a much better understanding of why each of us responded as we did, and I now have some tools I can attempt to use during future interactions.
It's an easy read which I need to reread now that I'm am in a far better frame of mind. Anyone who works in an organization, especially those who are managers or need to work with others should read this book and apply what they read.
