Power in the Blood: The Cross in the African American Experience (Bishop Henry Mcneal Turner/Sojourner Truth Series in Black Religion) ReviewJoAnne Terrell's "Power in the Blood?" is a richly informed and personally honest theological interrogation of the meaning of the cross in African American experience. Both serious and sensitive to the enduring effects of racism and sexism in American history, Christianity, and the church, Terrell's book faithfully considers classical Atonement theory in light of African American religious sources and personal narrative, ultimately arguing for a critical, yet redemptive appropriation of Jesus Christ on the cross in light of suffering.
The author is both an African American woman minister and scholar. Thus, she positions herself with the strong Womanist critique of atonement theory (particularly Delores William's critique of Christ as surrogate), but critically considers how Christ's blood spilt on the cross retains a sacramental understanding of redemptive suffering amidst the God's call for justice on the side of persons under the weight of oppression. Terrell stands on both the classical tradition (particularly Abelard) and, as a Womanist, on her own experience. From this evidence, the author critically appropriates how the suffering of Christ - the power of his blood - can and does historically provide a sense of both agency and strength.
The author's perspective is creatively informed and complex, substantiated with theological acumen across classical theology, African American religion, as well as her own personal experience and reflection.
"Power in the Blood?" is a great book for seminarians, pastors, and theologians interested in Atonement theory, Christology, Womanism, and African American experience.

The One in the Many: A Contemporary Reconstruction of the God-World Relationship ReviewIn this work, Bracken articulates Whitehead's process-relational metaphysics and/or Hartshorne's dipolar theism in trinitarian terms. He analyzes the works of numerous academicians and weaves their thought into what he calls a "social ontology" and a "metaphysics of intersubjectivity." In particular, he intends to "reconstruct" the Thomistic metaphysics of "being" with the Whiteheadian metaphysics of "becoming." He is also intent on ensuring that some basic Catholic doctrines remain intact - namely, "creation ex nihilo," and "subjective immortality" (Hartshorne rejected subjective immortality, something that I always felt was religiously inadequate).
The bottom line is that this a wonderful read. I really enjoyed it! I was amazed with Bracken's ability to distill the thought of so many eminent intellectuals and present the essence of their thinking in a nutshell. He covers a lot of ground here. Along the way, you will encounter Karl Rahner, Jon-Luc Marion, Louis-Marie Chauvet, Catherine LaCugna, Elizabeth Johnson, Jurgen Habermas, Bernard Lonergan, Hans-George Gadamer, Jacque Derrida, Alfred N. Whitehead, Kitaro Nishida, Ervin Laslo, Colin Gunton, Nancey Murphy, Calvin Shrag, David Ray Griffin, Robert Neville, and William Desmond.
This is highly recommeded to those who are interested how process-relational metaphysics may be reconciled with trinitarian theology. The One in the Many: A Contemporary Reconstruction of the God-World Relationship Overview

The Company You Keep: The Transforming Power of Male Friendship ReviewSeldom does one find a book on such a topic! I commend the author for taking the issue of male friendship to this level of visibility and discussion. I also admire the courage, transparency and vulnerability of the author. I have learned a lot through his personal experiences. His message that men seldom bond at a level other than a superficial one, resonated with me. As a corporate/executive coach, I have seen and experienced what the author describes as society's emphasis on self-suffiency in both corporate and private life. To take an excerpt from the book, "In today's business environment, we see that the assumption still exists that the strong, successful man is the man who gets the job done on his own (the John Wayne ideal). In our technology-crazed world, his job is to harness his laptop, saddle up his Blackberry or Palm Pilot, and charge into the day with his cell phone attached to his ear." Well, you get the point... The author presents convincing evidence that men can create and nurture supportive and transformational friendships. When reading this book, prepare yourself for a journey into the intellectual, emotional and spiritual facets of your life -- a journey that is relived through the eyes of a very successful entrepreneur and corporate executive. Reading the book has inspired and challenged me to re-evaluate and attempt to re-create my friendships in terms of the author's life experiences and recommendations. Enjoy the read! The Company You Keep: The Transforming Power of Male Friendship Overview

Pray without Ceasing: Revitalizing Pastoral Care ReviewI like this book so much I wrote two mini-reviews of praise during my reading of it. As I got closer to the end, I liked it more and more. I bought an extra copy and had it shipped to a friend before I was through. I think it deserves a place on every pastor's bookshelf, but it should not stay long on the shelf- it deserves to be read over and over again.
One reason I like the book so much is that it serves two purposes, and each of those for at last two audiences. Yet all are bound together in one integrated narrative, as best described in the opening paragraph: "Pastoral care cannot be Christian unless conducted in a spirit of reverence. The work of prayer is integral to every step. If we believe that it is finally God who provides what is needed, then prayer is not optional" (p. 1). This theme is woven into the rest of the book. In the chapter on prayers of lament, Hunsinger describes Job's unseen encounter with the Holy Spirit, then writes: "The unique history that unfolds between God and Job is a paradigm for pastoral care. The decisive encounter is shown to be not between the caregiver and the afflicted, but between the afflicted one and God" (p. 149)
Hunsinger presents first a "Theology of Koinonia" in which "prayer in the context of pastoral care draws persons into intimate fellowship with God and one another" (p. 3), then lays solid groundwork for understanding that prayer is the essence of communion with God.
Chapters two, three and four speak to the listening aspect of prayer- listening to God, listening to each other, and listening to ourselves. Chapters five, six, seven, eight and nine speak to distinctive types of prayer.
The book is thus both a primer on pastoral care, and a primer on prayer. It is easy to understand, written without jargon, and develops in logical manner. It can be used by pastor and layperson alike, as individuals or as a class. In fact, there are several wonderful appendages that provide teaching tips for each chapter. These are not lesson plans, but ideas to either shape or include in your own lesson plans. For instance, the ideas for teaching Chapter Two, Listening to God include a group practice of lectio divina (nicely outlined in the suggestion) and a group discussion of which Psalms might be worth "learning by heart." Many of the teaching ideas could be used as an individual reading or re-reading the book alone.
The book is almost poetic in its style. Consider this passage from chapter eight: "What does the church have to offer when natural eloquence fails? When someone shares a great joy, is it received with the dignity it deserves, or is it trivialized with paltry words of congratulations? Does the church have the sanctified imagination that can discern the sacrifice, the faithful hoping against hope, the persevering struggle that prepared the person's heart for this longed for day? Can caregivers enter imaginatively into the long night that preceded this day of splendor?" (p. 183).
The author was my professor for one class at seminary, but I did not take a basic course in pastoral care. This book has really added to the knowledge that I need to function as a pastor, both in terms of pastoral care and in my own prayer life.

Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids ReviewIf you want to do more than: raise an "okay" kid, in a grow-up, get-a-job, basically-decent-person sort of sense, then this book is for you! This book is about raising your children to be all God wants them to be (i.e. SAINTS!) and gives parents very practical suggestions on how to accomplish this. The author also cites numerous writings by our Holy Father and other esteemed Catholics that promote a parenting style in line with the values and ideals of the Catholic Church. This book specifically encourages the idea of attatchment parenting,(in a society that seems to practice de-tatchment parenting),which I found very gratifying since my husband and I try to do that anyway -and again the author cites specific Catholic sources to reinforce this viewpoint.I also think the author's appendix in the back about why he can't spank, and his critical examination of corporal punishment is one of the best Christian arguments against spanking that I have read. I can't say enough about how much I love this book! While the bookstores are stocked with many books on how not to let your children manipulate you (i.e. Babywise and others), and how to make your children fit into your lifestyle(instead of re-arranging yours to put your children first), this book is a refreshing and timely reminder that children are a gift from God and as such, deserve to be parented in a way fitting of their dignity as a human being! I intend to give it as a gift to the Catholic parents that I know. Do yourself a favor and buy one for yourself and one for a friend- they (and their children) will thank you for it!Parenting with Grace: Catholic Parent's Guide to Raising Almost Perfect Kids Overview

The Man in the Mirror : Solving the 24 Problems Men Face ReviewWhile Morley's book is hardly the kind for intellectuals and those who desire Tozer, Murray, and other deeper-life writers, the title is a good read for those who wish to be grounded in the basics of Christianity.
Since each chapter is around 10 pages and covers a wide variety of topics, the book is appropriate for a small men's group or for your own personal reading.
Among the topics Morley covers are:
1. God has a purpose for your life and a direction He wants you to go.
2. Principles for redefining what we need for job contentment.
3. We fear because we do not fully trust God.
4. Depend on God or you will be miserable!
5. No secrets are kept from God - He knows everything about us.
6. We can have a victorious thought life if we allow the Holy Spirit to have control in our lives.
7. Guidelines for dealing with anger.
8. Success at the office is not worth sacrificing important relationships.
As mentioned earlier, the book is tailored more towards those who with to be grounded in the basics of Christianity. However, those of us who are more mature Christians do occasionally have the need to be reminded of the basics lest we let arrogance get the best of us.
All in all, a good and recommended read. The Man in the Mirror : Solving the 24 Problems Men Face Overview

It support the view of what a Christian should be like. I randomly turn to any page that has a question on it. Then, I read the answer and will find that the answer helping me a lot. It makes me feeling that God is answering my question. Most of my questions are in the books...
Nowaday, Christians go to different churches. It is hard to know how to be a Christian that can be satisfied by different churches...
It is like a handbook. If you were fear to read Bible because it was too Holy, you might read this book and be encourage to read the Holy Bible. You would feel the need to read Bible!Growing as a Christian 101: A Guide to Stronger Faith in Plain Language (Christianity 101®) Overview

The Five Love Languages Singles Edition ReviewI read the original THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES by Dr. Gary Chapman when I was a single freshman in college. I don't remember what inspired me to pick up the book, given that the tagline was "How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate," but I couldn't put it down. I read it in one all-night sitting, crying my way through the sections that illuminated and explained tension I'd had in specific relationships with family and friends. It was dark outside but light bulbs were going off inside my head all night.
"Aha! His primary love language is Acts of Service! No wonder he gets so frustrated when we kids don't help around the house."
"Quality time! That's what she values, not my professions of appreciation and friendship."
Based on its applicability to my own life, I immediately determined that Chapman's ideas about there being five love languages were spot-on. And so did about a zillion other people since he has sold approximately that number of books. If you're one of the few people who has no clue what I'm talking about when I say the five love languages, let me explain.
In Chapman's theory, there are five ways in which people express and understand love. These five "languages" are Acts of Service, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. Chapman believes that while some people can often express and understand love in any number of these languages, we all have a primary love language through which we are most comfortable expressing and receiving love. He goes on to say that tension in relationships often stems from not understanding the other person's primary love language --- not understanding how the other person is communicating their love and how that person needs to be communicated to in order to understand they are loved.
Though Chapman originally framed his teaching on the love languages in the context of marriage, it quickly became clear that people in all stages of life were connecting with the concept of the languages. And over the last several years, he has tailored his message for different groups in books including THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF CHILDREN, THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES OF TEENAGERS, THE LOVE LANGUAGES OF GOD, and now, THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES.
The United States has more singles that any other nation in the world except for India and China. Four out of every ten Americans are single, so it makes sense that Chapman would choose to address this large audience. In THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES the core teaching of the original book stays intact but he shapes his message for singles of all stripes --- never married, divorced, widowed, separated, and single parents --- by including anecdotes of the unmarried dealing with various relationship issues.
My one complaint about this book is that the bulk of the anecdotes still seem to revolve around romantic relationships and the looming specter of marriage. A couple of chapters are dedicated to the application of the love languages with roommates, co-workers, family members, etc., but in the chapters that deal with each of the love languages in detail, the illustrations revolve around dating relationships. That's not bad per se, but I would have liked to see more diversity in the types of relationships (i.e. best friends, classmates) that are addressed here.
Having said that, the five love languages themselves continue to ring true in my experience and their adaptation for the single audience is welcome. I highly recommend THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES FOR SINGLES to anyone who would like to improve communication with the people in his or her life. Chapman himself writes:
"My desire for the single who reads this book is that you will learn both to receive and find love in all five love languages. I am assuming that those who take time to read a book on love desire to become better persons, to have better relationships, and to reach their potential of leaving a positive impact on the world. It is my sincere belief that learning to speak and understand the five love languages will help you reach that objective."
