Hypnosis for Beginners ReviewI've read several of Dylan Morgan's books (and many books on hypnosis, from Erickson to Yapko to Newton), and his are consistently excellent- lots of information on the workings of the mind from both a practical and neurocognitive perspective. Dr. Morgan strikes me as a client-centered practitioner with efficacy and the client's best interests at heart. His down-to-earth, conversational style and clear writing are easy to digest, but much is learned. You will reap the benefit of his many years of experience- he demystifies much of the hypnotic process and yet approaches the work with respect/reverence. Highly recommended!Hypnosis for Beginners Overview

NLP at Work, Second Edition: Neuro Linguistic Programming, The Difference That Makes a Difference in Business (People Skills for Professionals) ReviewOh dear. I thought long and hard about whether I should write a review on this book.
Clearly work has gone into writing it and I did pay quite a few dollars for it, so I really wish it had been good.
But no, I have to be honest, I think it has done more to turn me off the subject of NLP than even the most skeptical write-ups on the subject.
I was looking for a book that would give me a proper guide to NLP skills I could use in the workplace or business.
This neither explained properly or simply the NLP skills, nor their application in business.
It did make an attempt, but it did the worst possible thing it could - it bored the hell out of me.
To say that NLP is meant to be software for your brain, the science and practice of human excellence and is said to be as potentially limitless as the imagination itself, this book bored my socks off.
Sorry, but I found it so dry and dull.
None of the techniques, theories, etc, seemed to be very practical or hang together, it just seems to go from one subject to another with no accumulation of value or learning, which is ironic because that is what NLP is meant to be about.
I'm no expert, but I can tell you that one of the first books I ever read on NLP doesn't go into all the dull as dishwater complexities that this book does, but it has 100 times the value. That book is Change Your Life in Seven Days by Paul McKenna (see my review). It doesn't actually even mention NLP but contains all the useful techniques without the dullness of this work, and it's much cheaper, too, with a free recorded guided mind reprogramming session which is the true power of NLP in action.
Back to this book - it seems to have little application in business and is pushing a bright and frothy agenda. Well business isn't all like that. Alot of the time it's tough stuff and I can't see anything here helping even remotely.
Yes, I know all that stuff about mirroring and matching the language and gestures of the other person, but really, unless you are extremely quick, the transactions between people are so subtle that you are not exactly likely to get some negotiation breakthrough of massive proportions by the means described here.
I have since discovered a number of books that are much more effective in outlining persuasion/negotation and communication techniques in business and blow this book out of the water.
As I say, it put me off NLP for some time. However, from other books I have seen some merit in the subject and I still have some interest in it.
I have checked out a book on Amazon called Introducing NLP and have only read the searchable pages online.
However, those few pages seemed to give more clear and compact info than the first 250 pages of NLP at work.
Even the subject matter in NLP at Work is just poorly applied to business. Modelling is apparently just copying what someone else does to get the same effect. Well I learnt how to do that at school, and it's not that revolutionary a concept.
And meta-messages. What is the overall message a business is trying to give? This is not a meta-message. This is known as corporate image/identity and again is not a revolutionary concept.
If you need tips from this book on it, in the very brief way it is mentioned, then you are probably sunk already.
The only slightly redeeming part is that the section on anchoring is reasonably well described.
However, I think this book needs to decide what it is trying to be.
If you want to give a business person, who is fresh to the subject, the tools of NLP to use in a business setting, you have to come from a business perspective.
That perspective is a practical one. One that doesn't have time to trawl through all the hokey-pokey that is dragged through here.
After all, NLP is meant to be about what works. And this book sure doesn't work for me!NLP at Work, Second Edition: Neuro Linguistic Programming, The Difference That Makes a Difference in Business (People Skills for Professionals) Overview

The Big Book Of NLP Techniques: 200+ Patterns & Strategies of Neuro Linguistic Programming ReviewWhen you read this book, you can discover many practical techniques that you will not find under the single roof of another nlp book. I imagine you would have to buy several different books to match the content of this one.
I wondered in buying this book if it would be possible to use it for training purposes, or at least use some of it in training. What I would recommend would be a spiral bound version for ease of use.
Reading through it gradually I have learned many things I did not know.
For example when I learned nlp I was taught the three perceptual positions of nlp.
1. Associated - subjective. Seeing hearing and feeling with your own VAK.
2. Dissociated - Seeing yourself in the picture. Like watching a movie of yourself jumping in a lake rather than jumping in a lake.
3. Other person position. What would you do if you were in another person's shoes?
This book offers two more perceptual positions, although opinions tend to differ once you move beyond the basic 3.
In addition it offers many intriguing techniques you may never have heard of, such as falling in love pattern, resolving internal conflicts, loving yourself pattern, assertiveness installation, the excuse blowout pattern, circle of excellence, forgiveness pattern, the Godiva chocolate pattern, and Erickson's 55 hypnotic phrases to name a few.
If you are new to nlp, and not yet ready for something this comprehensive I recommend Bandler's "Get the Life you Want," and/or "Sourcebook of Magic" by L Michael Hall, which has 77 patterns. Then, as you get more experienced, and start working with people, you can run with this book, having learned to walk with the others.
Hope this was useful. The Big Book Of NLP Techniques: 200+ Patterns & Strategies of Neuro Linguistic Programming Overview

The NLP Coach: A Comprehensive Guide to Personal Well-Being & Professional Success ReviewSince `our habits determine our future' a lot of self-help revolves around changing our habits (not so easily done.) I like this particular book because it doesn't present NLP as an easy fix but instead they take quite a bit of space to explain how we think and act in habits and patterns. The authors then offer NLP techniques to help change your patterns until you develop new habits. As in all self-help there's not really much new here and anyone who has read Tony Robbins will be familiar with most of the concepts presented. It's a good book, though, and very useful for understanding the development of habits and cycles. I recommend it as a more objective presentation of NLP without all the fire walking hoopla. The NLP Coach: A Comprehensive Guide to Personal Well-Being & Professional Success Overview

Neuro-linguistic Programming For Dummies (For Dummies (Psychology & Self Help)) ReviewHave you ever run into the sort of person who talks about things they know nothing about, but talks on and on and on, apparently in the hope that if they keep talking for long enough then the law of averages means they must get at least some of it right?
That's what I felt I was up against when I was reading this book.
Firstly, it is badly laid out, by which I mean that it has no obvious flow other than (I guess) the order in which things popped into the authors' heads.
Secondly, a significant amount of the material has little or nothing to do with NLP - like the "Wheel of Life" and the stuff on PTSD - and quite a lot the material, whether about NLP or not, is at best ambiguous and at worst plain inaccurate.
Thirdly, the frequent, pointless repetition of quite basic material, and the inclusion of the irrelevant material, means that a whole lot of genuine NLP material gets left out.
In the case of the meta programs, for example, only six meta programs are included, and even those aren't explained particularly well. Indeed, at one point in the book the authors claim that all meta programs ("metaprograms", as they call them) work along a sliding scale. Which clearly is NOT true of meta programs such as the "Work Preference Filter", the "Primary Interest Filter", and especially not in the case of the "In Time/Through Time" or "Time Storage Filter" meta program, which the authors confuse with "Time Lines" as in Time Line Therapy.
Worst of all, there doesn't seem to have been any attempt to edit the book once it was complete. Thus, for example, there are several places where a topic flagged up as being covered "later in this chapter" actually turns up on the very next page. Likewise the text itself is inconsistent, as in:
"We get very good at one style of thinking and processing information and let the rest of our senses lie dormant in a rusty heap."
Not only is this not true, psychologically speaking, but the authors flatly contradict themselves less than three pages later:
"As human beings we naturally blend a rich and heady mix of these three main dimensions, yet we tend to have a preference for one mode over the others."
So, "rusty heap" or "rich and heady mix"?
If you know enough to recognise which description is more accurate then you already know far more about NLP than this book will tell you. And if you don't know enough to weed out the nonsense, I'm afraid you're likely to end up with a pretty confused view of the subject if you read this book.
Definitely one of the worst books on NLP I've read.

Unstoppable Confidence: How to Use the Power of NLP to Be More Dynamic and Successful ReviewA more apt title for this book would be to call it "The Encyclopedia of Unstoppable Confidence".
I have not yet come across any other book, which focuses 100% on building greater confidence. This book gives you step by step detailed instructions to really "go for it".
Kent clearly explains the crucial difference between "confidence" and "competence" in the first few pages. I made the mistake of assuming that if I was competent in a specific area, than I automatically had confidence in that area.
Once you understand the distinction he gives a simple but highly effective formula
Competence + confidence = success
Have you ever had the feeling of a light bulb switching on in your head? Well I had that same feeling when I really understood the difference between "confidence" and "competence" and resolved to take the book more seriously.
On page 27 he gives a fantastic example about how to disassociate your emotions from yourself personally. In other words DONT take possession of something, which is just a mental process. Some examples of mental processes from the book are fear, shyness and depression. All of these are not actual things but just mental processes or sequences of thoughts that run in your mind.
A brilliant example and I quote from the book (page 26) "The language you use to describe what you are feeling impacts that feeling tremendously, and it is your knowledge, your awareness of these processes that gives you power over them. Just like when somebody said, "I' am depressed". What they've done is built that notion into their very being. Nobody can be depressed all the time. If they were, they wouldn't' call it depression. It'd just be their normal state of being. Instead, people who consider themselves depressed should be saying, "I run a process through my mind that causes me to experience certain pictures, sounds, and feelings inside that I have collectively labeled as depression."
Yes I know this sounds like some new age stuff, and until you TRY IT OUT yourself you will not realize the power of disassociating yourself from your processes. There are many more such examples, which switched on the light bulb in my head.
The book also talks about creating the kind of body language, which gives you unstoppable confidence. I wish there were some pictures of "steepling fingers" as I could think of a variety of ways to steeple fingers based on the authors explanation in the book and am not sure which is the correct way.
Another excellent technique is to parrot to create verbal rapport. The book lists key words/phrases to help people keep on talking non-stop and increase rapport. Be careful using them however because using them correctly will ensure that you will be listening to them for hours...ahh the price of success!!!
Another superb technique is to ask open-ended question, instead of yes/no type of questions to gain rapport.
My biggest gripe with the book is that while the author specifically mentions about creating a personal confidence calendar to schedule and practice various exercises in the book he does not give any suggested plans. This book contains so many different techniques for building confidence that unless you take good notes or read the book multiple times it is easy to miss some important techniques. I would have appreciated a sample step by step plan(menu) to incorporate in daily life, just like some of the dieting and exercise books suggest.
Obviously such a plan will be generalized but at least it will be a good starting point to the other alternative of digging through the book multiple times and/or make copious notes. The serious student will no doubt do what ever it takes and assimilate most of the techniques from the book. This is not a read and throw type of book. This is a book you will come back to again and again as you build layer upon layer of confidence techniques into your personality.
The cover design of a man stomping confidently makes me smile every time I look at it, which is good since this makes me pick up the book again!
The words on the page are densely packed in the book and it seemed liked it took forever to read a page. I sincerely feel every self-development book should reinforce concepts learned in each chapter by having a brief summary and/or short quiz and real life exercises at the end of each chapter. I wish this book had some of these to help reinforce the concepts at each stage.
If the book were to contain only one chapter "Twenty explosive techniques for unstoppable confidence" it would be worth it. One technique I already started using is called "rapid confidence at will". I used the PUMA GRRRROWL and felt simply awesome. I used some of the techniques, which appealed to me immediately, as I read the book. There are just sooooooo many techniques that I will keep going back to the book again and again.
I would have appreciated more examples of how the author used these techniques to overcome shyness in a variety of real life circumstances.
One section I particularly fell in love with is the chapter titled "Speaking the language of confidence". Kent contrasts the vocabulary of the shy person (who uses words like try, hope, attempt, wish etc) versus the vocabulary of the confident person (absolutely, guaranteed, sure, certainly etc). As I gained more awareness I am minimizing use of the shy persons vocabulary.
This book uses a lot of NLP based techniques, but thankfully the complex jargon is substituted for simple precise explanations. The appendix contains a comprehensive list of visual, auditory and kinesthetic qualities.
All in all an excellent book, and a MUST have in your personal success library if you are a serious student of success.Unstoppable Confidence: How to Use the Power of NLP to Be More Dynamic and Successful Overview

Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-formation: How to Harness the Power of Hypnosis to Ignite Effortless and Lasting Change ReviewI have read little on hypnosis and was not aware of Bandler or NLP before reading this book. Therefore, I write this review as a contrast to the majority of reviews posted on Amazon which display a greater level of sophistication than I brought to the book; thereby providing a point of view for those coming to the book with a more elementary background.
Bandler promotes some interesting ideas. One is his continual insistence that psychological change need not be traumatic nor take years to accomplish, as is often espoused and practiced by mental health professionals. Also interesting was his idea that people report their psychological states more literally than we generally imagine (for example, someone should be taken at their word whenever they say they feel "heavy" or "things look dark," etc.) and his treatment of psychological distress under such a premise.
As a novice in this field, however, his suggestions on what to do while in a trance were not altogether helpful, because his explanations upon how to achieve self-hypnosis in the first place were cursory and incomplete (for the beginner at least).
Additionally, perhaps 50 pp. of self-promotion and product-placement could have been cut from the book.
For the true believer in NLP, I'm sure this is a great book.
For someone familiar with the literature on hypnosis, but not necessarily an advocate of Bandler, I couldn't say.
For the absolute beginner, I could only say that it will introduce you to some terms and concepts that may be new and helpful.
So, my review is mixed. Buy it used.Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-formation: How to Harness the Power of Hypnosis to Ignite Effortless and Lasting Change Overview

The Power of Body Language Review
What you don't say can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. As interesting as it is to learn to read others, it is also important to learn your own particular non verbal quirks: i.e.: Tonya's book teaches that although the reader may not be aware of it, people receive messages through body language (nonverbal signals) that can have a huge impact in a positive or negative way, just as the sound of your voice may make more of an impact (positively or negatively) than your actual words.
She teaches the reader to watch for body language signals may indicate truths that are not expressed in words. She also teaches the nuances and psychology of mirroring body language. The book clarifies the meanings of signals and nonverbal cues and shows the reader how to use this knowledge to his/her best advantage in every day situations, including the differences in male and female body language.
After reading this book, I found that watching political speeches more interesting, especially when the body language and spoken words do not match.
I would recommend this book to everyone.
