PMP Project Management Professional Study Guide, Second Edition ReviewAs a newcomer to project management, I was a skeptical about finding a book which would make the subject interesting and approachable. This book does both. Phillips's writing style is lively and engaging - he gives a sense of being with his reader every step of the way. Despite the fact that the book is more than 500 pages long, it is organized well and moves quickly. I was able to keep track of what I was learning through the summaries and key terms at the end of each chapter, along with the extensive glossary and appendix which condenses key ideas for the exam. The self-tests at the end of each chapter also allow the reader to interact with the text and practice what they've learned. After working through these, I felt well-prepared for the exam, as I found out from taking the practice version, included on the CD which comes with the book. Overall, the text is generous in what it offers for the price. It provides an effective, user-friendly approach to preparing for the PMP exam. Elizabeth Lee, Ph.D.

CAPM Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, Release 1.3 ReviewI purchased this book in anticipation of taking the CAPM exam. I told several of my co-workers about it as well because the concept seemed great - the study questions are aligned to the PMBOK Guide AND the answers show you why the correct answer is best.
I took and passed the CAPM exam today. Thank goodness I passed, or I would have been furious with the authors of this study guide. There are numerous, countless typos throughout the book. In some instances, the answers don't match the question AT ALL. It's completely different!
In other places, it will show that the correct answer is "b" for example. Then just below, where the explanations are written, the smiley face is next to a different answer choice.
Furthermore, there are basic simple typos and spelling errors.
I also felt that the guide contained a lot of "fluff". There were many study questions that have NOTHING to do with the PMBOK Guide and didn't help me prepare for the assessment.
There were so many errors that I started to doubt the usefulness of this guide. Now that I've completed the exam, I will say that it helps to see questions written in a similar format. Also, in studying this guide, I was able to go back and verify questions that I got incorrect or were in error in the book with the PMBOK Guide.
I plan on writing to the author as well. If the errors are corrected, I would feel better about giving this book a stronger recommendation.CAPM Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, Release 1.3 Overview

Effective Communications for Project Management ReviewThis book is about theory and practice of communications. It defines a concept, describes why it is important and then shows "how-to" for the concept. Author states that project managers spend 80 to 90 percent of their time communicating in some form. Communication remains one of the major differentiators between project success and failure.The book also emphasizes that communication is a difficult process. Planning and goal setting is important for every mode of communication - written, meetings, presentations, etc. If you are not clear on your objective, communication will be vague and will cause more confusion. Project managers are the "linchpins," interacting with a large, diversified group of people, requiring them to communicate effectively and regularly. As per the author Rich Kliem, Communicating is about people, not about media. Understanding people, their style and preferences for communications gives the project manager leverage for effective communication.

One of my favorite chapters was Personality Style and Communications. This is applicable for communications in general. The book describes Myers-Briggs temperament, Birkman Model, Color Code and other models. Each of these models identifies people in various categories. Based on a category, one can choose an effective way of communication. This can be really handy when you have to communicate with a small group of people. Another important point is the link between Communications and leadership. It is interesting to note that one of the key characteristics of effective leadership is the ability to communicate. Using that as the premise, project managers who become adroit as communicators will likely become, if they are not already, effective leaders.
At the end of every chapter, there is a checklist with a series of Yes/No questions. This can be a guide for planning, a quick summary of the elements as well as a reference to validate if your communication was not successful.Effective Communications for Project Management Overview
