Multicultural Manners: New Rules of Etiquette for a Changing Society ReviewNorine Dresser's work is an invaluable guide to helping people navigate the dangerous shoals of intercultural intersections. From the varying significance of yellow flowers through the opposing attitudes toward salt to the values of folk remedies, Dresser gives excellent and respectful advice.
Organized by clear and useful categories, the book offers interesting anecdotes to illustrate the cultural clashes sparked by apparently small things like the color of the flowers in a thank-you gift. Where I have the experience to know, I find her information accurate. She is invariably respectful of all cultures, and offers explanations of cultural beliefs which may on the surface seem irrational to our Western perceptions.
The book is written in language and style which is available to readers as young as junior high school, but there is no condescension either to the reader or the described cultures.
This is fine and valuable book, helpful to international businesspeople, school teachers, travelers, and neighbors. I recommend it to anyone who comes in contact with people from other countries, either here or abroad.Multicultural Manners: New Rules of Etiquette for a Changing Society Overview

Both books are good and if you have an interest, buy one or the other, but don't buy both. I expected some of the same info in each book but not entire sections copied word for word. I enjoyed the book but just regret buying both as that was a waste.

In his attempt to include a multitude of countries and customs, nothing gets decent coverage. Though it's doubtful anyone would expect a book about using English to serve as a foreign-language phrasebook, the brief appendix tries to do just that, contributing to the book's scattershot feel.
The Church Lady seems to have ghostwritten five pages of Chapter 5, where we are informed of the Canadians' "special heritage," Quebecers' "special pride in their ethnic heritage," and Australians' "special brand of coined and abbreviated words," not to mention their "special brand of lingo."
This book is for you if you're an after-dinner speaker who needs cute anecdotes about language and cultural snafus, or if lists of misstatements like "Our Father who art in heaven, Howard be thy name," send you into convulsions of laughter. If you are going to travel abroad or you meet foreign people, you would like to know what these people understand from your body language. Of course, the book also gives you good material for chatting with friends from anywhere (including your own coutry).
Don't expect the book to tell you what a gesture means in every part of the world or to show you every gesture used in some part of the world. The book of course doesn't do such a hard task, though it tries: it explains you the gestures that are generalized (or most common) in a country. However, be always aware that there are exceptions and gestures you should know and are not included in the book.
Below are some questions you'll answer reading the book. In some cases the book gives you also the explanation about the gesture (what it comes from).
Where should you avoid the "OK sign"?
Where should a man enter before a woman?
Why Latin people get closer to you when talking?
