How Can I Forgive You: The Courage To Forgive, the Freedom Not To ReviewThis book is fantastic. Instead of the typical "forgive or don't forgive" as being your only two options, it gives you a way to deal with, get over, and release yourself from past hurts. It's not always possible to forgive someone who's hurt you if they haven't shown any effort to repair the damage, and choosing not to forgive them simply poisons your life. This book teaches another alternative, acceptance, and walks you through the exercises needed to "get over" past hurts. One thing I really like is that it also helps you re-examine the things that have happened to you and look at them in an honest, broader scope. Bottom line--I think it's going to dramatically help me heal the numerous past hurts I've been hanging onto once I go through each exercise, and I'd highly recommend it!How Can I Forgive You: The Courage To Forgive, the Freedom Not To Overview

Betchen has taken a complex psychological pattern that's common among couples--the pursuer-distancer dynamic--and written about it in a way that's helpful to therapists who treat the problem and accessible to everyday readers who want to better understand their own behavior and relationships. Drawing on his clinical experience and research, the author examines how couples use sex, work and family to pursue each other and distance from each other; he includes many case studies, which gives the reader a picture of what it would be like to participate in couples counseling. (And contrary to conventional wisdom, it's not always the woman who does the pursuing and the man who does the distancing. Dr. Betchen also writes about the male pursuer-female distancer.) I highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in better understanding his or her behavior in the context of a committed relationship. Multicultural Couple Therapy ReviewAs a clinical psychologist, I found this book to be highly engaging. The separate chapters are all written by clinicians who work with culturally diverse couples. There are useful links to websites, movies, and other materials. I used this book to help write a course on gender, and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to work with couples in an effective way. Reconcilable Differences: Hope and Healing for Troubled Marriages ReviewI have read many marriage books and thought this one would just be a retread of suggestions that I had read in tons of other books but this book is a superb blend of theoretical and practical ideas on how couples can get over emotionally painful issues and move on to intimacy.
Dr Toddy Holeman has woven stores of betrayal and reconciliation with plain and hopeful biblical and theological truth into a practical book on how real people have reconciled.
Here is helpful information for any one who has had a fractured relationship, whether it was a longtime friend, business colleague or other family member. When the betrayal is your spouse it is even more deadly. This excellent book is full of true (hard to believe) stories and how good biblical counseling made the difference. It shows that it may take years of rebuilding but like a broken bone, it can be made stronger than it ever was before over time with lots of prayer and hard work. Dr Holeman has used the best research on forgiveness and made it accessible for anyone to understand. In addition the book contains 2 sections with resources for reconciliation and advice about reconciliation, a glossary, references and a very complete scripture index. It is a book to be trusted.
It would be excellent for counselors and pastors working with troubled couples as well as the couples themselves. I feel honored to have been exposed to this wonderful title and will make sure our marriage counselors get first look at it.
