The Psychology of Death: 3rd Edition ReviewRobert Kastenbaum is an "old-hand" when it comes to thanatology, yet this book fails to reflect the depth and insight of his other works.
This volume is geared for researchers more than practitioners as the author reviews, in a clinical way, research on death related to developmental aspects, gender, research methods and so forth. The authors attempt at psychodynamics of death in his chapter on the death instinct was so convoluted as to be incoherent. Furthermore, the author seemed to fail to have read Freuds' book: Beyond the Pleasure Principle and Civilization and Its Discontents-not to mention Eigens': Psychic Deadness. The author should have stuck to his Kaplan and Saddock style book on the psychology of death and avoided depth psychology altogether. Missing also, of course is a Jungian perspective, ego psychology, object relations, Marcias' idea of identity style, Kruglanski's the need for closure, the constructive approach, terror management theory, the ideas of Ernest Becker or narrative approach and so on.
The authors other books reflect keen insight and much broader understanding then this book does. For those researchers with a new interest in death or for a young student considering research on death this may serve as a narrow introduction to the psychology of deathThe Psychology of Death: 3rd Edition Overview

Head, Heart & Hara: The Soul Centers Of West And East ReviewSo, this review is a long time coming. I have read and re-read this book. I pour myself over it's pages, only to re-collect my reading, and want to re-view it yet again. Here in lies the most sophisticated response to trends in the new age, in humanistic psychology and philosophy, to the many variations on eastern meditation practices and the many appropriations by modern westernized social sub-cultures, of generations old, methods and theories of eastern philosophical progress. I have not come across such a well researched, and articulated, method for the realization of the primacy of awareness, over soul, spirit, matter, energy, etc. Though to be fair, I myself have been following the path to the observations made by the author through numerous authors, and techniques, for almost a decade, never quite making sense of what I'm listening for.
The Hara is no "energy center" it is the 'center' of Being, and as such, is the extension point of Awareness of Non-Being. This is grasped through identification with the Field-Dynamic Aware Center of Being, within the subjective space experienced as the abdominal space, termed tanden or hara in traditional Japanese culture. The ease with which what this implies is communicated, has peaked a great amount of personal interest in the corpus of Mr. Wilberg, and in Mr. Wilberg himself. I look forward to posting more reviews of other works of his.Head, Heart & Hara: The Soul Centers Of West And East Overview

The Lost Art of Being Happy: Spirituality for Sceptics ReviewI really like the premise of this book, the internal vs. external influences and gaining an interior skill set that can turn off anxiety and stress while increasing awareness. I couldn't wait to dig into it for a good winter read. However, 100 pages into the book I was wondering, will it ever start, when do we get to the good stuff? The great revelations the author makes could be condensed - NEEDS to be condensed for easier reading. He makes simple writing mistakes with badly framed ideas and word repetition. He jumps around in his logic quite a bit.
Although I agree with is basic idea that we're internal creatures - the bulk of the book is simplistic and overly wordy. There are much better essays and writings on the subject of internal peace, happiness and awareness out there. The Lost Art of Being Happy: Spirituality for Sceptics Overview

Inner Productivity: A Mindful Path to Efficiency and Enjoyment in Your Work Reviewinner productivity is one of those rare books that comes along every so often. I have read numerous books on procrastination , visualization and inner critic relief. The techniques and methods for calming the mind presented in these books could fill a notebook. One method always presented is deep breathing. I have in the past tried it but never stuck with it. Chrises book however made such a compelling and logical arguement as to why it works i gave it a shot for a week. I can now see his point . There are no magic methods, secret pills or mantras that can make a person relax and stop procrastinating. The power comes when a person can be at ease with their fears that are making them procrastinate. The only way to do this is by breathing and staying with our fear till it goes away which it does. I highly recommend this book especially for the self help junkies. This book may finally put an end to your visit to the self help section of the bookstore.Inner Productivity: A Mindful Path to Efficiency and Enjoyment in Your Work Overview
