Identifying Hidden Needs: Creating Breakthrough Products ReviewMost experts fail to explore the foundation of innovation: research. Authors Keith Goffin, Fred Lemke and Ursula Koners believe most new products fail because they are not based on research that uncovers consumers' "hidden needs." Developing new offerings based on the data produced by outdated research methods is like trying to cook a gourmet meal with inferior ingredients. The authors try to put a human face on ethnographic research by supplying several case studies per chapter, but that does little to relieve the dry and technical nature of the subject matter. The text is not for the casual reader. For market researchers and product developers, however, getAbstract believes this treatise will offer new, worthy ideas and methods presented in a variety of formats with charts, graphs, grids and more.Identifying Hidden Needs: Creating Breakthrough Products Overview

Graphic Designer's Guide to Pricing, Estimating & Budgeting Revised Edition ReviewThe title doesn't really describe this book. Two of the 14 chapters pertain to pricing and estimates, but don't expect a GAG PEG-style list of suggested numbers. In fact, actual fees are seldom mentioned.
This book mostly covers the business of graphic design, from hiring to self promo to client relations. If you're getting the Creative Business newsletter, you're already getting this information. If not, this is a practical guide. Williams is experienced, and her advice makes good sense. Her writing style is casual, and the book is a quick read.Graphic Designer's Guide to Pricing, Estimating & Budgeting Revised Edition Overview

The Practical Guide to Information Design ReviewWe've given this book the "EDITOR'S CHOICE" award in DTG Magazine and [...] because of its importance to designers and visual communicators.
As graphic design made the transition into information design, and culture evolved from the information age into the knowledge age there have been only a few books that rise to the status of milestones. The Practical Guide to Information Design is one of those milestone books that anyone in the visual communications field is obligated to read, learn and understand.
In this book, Ronnie guides the designer through the analytical processes necessary to dissect large quantities of information into logical "gulps", and then organize it so readers can clearly utilize the information towards the intended goals. Her writing combines strength with sensitivity, with references and supporting matter all along the way.

Visible Signs: An introduction to semiotics in the visual arts (2nd edition) (Required Reading Range) ReviewThis book aims to be a kind of "Theory for Dummies" book you won't be embarrassed to be seen reading in public. The text is a concise, grab bag collection of semiotics and cultural theory for graphic designers. In the place of the cartoons you'll find in books like Introducing Semiotics, however, Visible Signs is filled with photos and examples arranged in attractive layouts.
While some of the visual examples are helpful, many exist primarily as signifiers of taste. The illustration of the dog next to the caption on Foucault, for instance, has nothing to do with Foucault or "gender-dominated practices." It's there to enhance the overall look and feel of the text. The entire text, then, becomes an unintentional illustration of Bourdieau's claim (described here and there) that certain modes of taste are legitimized by a discontinuity between art and life. The images here are less about explaining, and more about exercising cultural heft. In this way, Crow draws from the authority of tasteful image-making practice even while seeking to demystify the process of cultural production.
Vital Signs is an easy-to-read overview of ideas, more like an annotated bibliography or an expanded masters thesis. As such, it's a good starting point for research on scholars or theories that might appeal to graphic designers. The central irony of the book is that the while the layouts show an understanding of tasteful visual conventions, the author is unable to transcend these conventions. The layouts come across as the work of someone who is attuned to weight of cultural tradition and value--even while remaining beholden to it.Visible Signs: An introduction to semiotics in the visual arts (2nd edition) (Required Reading Range) Overview
